The YBA-codenamed vehicle is the first compact SUV that Maruti Suzuki has lined up for India. The 2016 Auto Expo is touted to be the venue of this compact SUV’s official launch and unveil. Interest around the YBA remains high as Maruti Suzuki will take aim at the likes of the Ford EcoSport and the upcoming Nissan Kicks concept based SUV with this vehicle. A rumour on the interweb suggests that the YBA’s market name would be the Vitara Brezza. Maruti Suzuki’s first attempt with the Vitara badge in the Grand Vitara SUV has come a cropper. But the Vitara Brezza moniker could turn things around though.
Firstly, the real reason for the Grand Vitara’s poor run at the hustings was the lack of a diesel motor under the hood, and also the fact that the CBU import SUV was priced quite high. In the Vitara Brezza nee YBA, Maruti Suzuki is targeting a whole new segment of buyers who’re looking for an affordable, sub-4 meter SUV. Also, the YBA/Vitara Brezza will be sold with petrol and turbo diesel engine options. The 1.2 liter K-Series petrol and the 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engines are likely to power the compact SUV, with five speed manual transmissions served up across both the motors.
In terms of pricing, a sub-6 lakh rupee starting price tag is what the Vitara Brezza is likely to be pegged at. A monocoque body and a front wheel drive layout are two givens. It remains to be seen if Maruti Suzuki offers the Vitara Brezza with a four wheel drive mechanism. This possibility is slim given the fact that the demand for such variants is quite low in the Indian market, where fuel efficiency and affordability take precedence over go-anywhere ability. Also, an automated manual transmission could also be offered on the Vitara Brezza, considering how bullish the Indian automaker is about this route.
