Ahead of its 2015 launch, the Maruti Suzuki YRA code-named premium B+ segment hatchback has been completely unmasked. This car will be aimed straight at the Hyundai i20 Elite, as Maruti Suzuki’s grand new entry into the B+ segment hatchback space in India. The YRA premium hatchback shows cues of the Swift and the Dzire up front, while the rear is a completely new design that is unlike any other Maruti Suzuki car we’ve seen before. In profile, the YRA looks premium, what with a long wheelbase design that seems intent on delivering a spacious cabin to its occupants.
The YRA’s spyshots are straight out of an airport, indicating that the car has just arrived into India. A Japanese origin is on the cards for the first few YRA hatchbacks that have made landfall into India. This is indicated by the Suzuki-only badging on the car’s rear. Maruti Suzuki is expected to use the first crop of imported YRA hatchbacks for stripping down and testing. The YRA that will be launched in India next year will have a high amount of localization, to make for a competitive price tag. The car is expected to pack in petrol and diesel engine options. Both manual and automatic transmissions could make it to the car.
Maruti Suzuki is taking a steady upward march in terms of the cars it sells in India. The recently launched Ciaz C-Segment sedan has pushed the Maruti Suzuki brand upwards, as a purveyor of feature packed, premium cars. The YRA hatchback will continue on the ground work laid down by the Ciaz. Indian buyers are also maturing and the demand for premium hatchbacks has been growing. If the big success of the Hyundai i20 Elite is of any indication, a well priced YRA hatchback has plenty of potential to fly the Maruti Suzuki flag high in the premium B+ segment hatchback segment. In terms of looks, the YRA already seems a winner.
