The Jeep Compass has undoubtedly brought a lot of success to its manufacturer in the premium small-SUV space. While the Compass is a well-sorted product that really has a lot going for it, a part of its success comes from the fact that there’s no direct competition that this small-SUV has to face. Its nearest rival, the Mahindra XUV500, is bigger in size and doesn’t feel as premium as the FCA product. On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki is enjoying a similar success story in the sub-4m segment with its Vitara Brezza enjoying a clear lead over all its rivals.
However, it looks like the country’s largest-selling carmaker is about to challenge the Fiat-owned American manufacturer with the launch of the new Vitara SUV in the premium small-SUV segment. While there have been several speculations on the launch of the Vitara, it’s only now that the upcoming SUV has been spied testing in India.
A quick check on the vehicle registration portal reveals that this Vitara is Diesel-powered and was registered in India last year. The Vitara measures 4,175 mm in length, 1,775 mm in width and 1,610 mm in height. While slightly smaller than the Compass, it is likely to offer similar levels of interior space.
It is being said that the new Maruti Vitara SUV will launch with two engine options – a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol and a 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel. The diesel engine will be the same Fiat-sourced Multijet unit that powered the pre-facelift S-Cross.
The Suzuki Vitara is sold abroad with an optional AllGrip four-wheel-drive system. However, it remains to be seen if the India-spec Vitara would also offer this option. There will be a long list of comfort- and convenience-enhancing features to make sure that the Vitara feels as premium as the Compass.
While the company is yet to divulge clear details on the launch of the Vitara, it has earlier hinted towards bringing in a ‘bigger than Brezza’ model for the Indian SUV market. Addressing a section of media, RC Bhargava, Chairman, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has said: “We will launch an SUV higher than 4 meters. But it will not happen immediately in the next couple of quarters or even a year. It will take us a little bit longer to launch the SUV.” The new Maruti Vitara SUV is expected to launch in India in Rs 12 lakh – 16 lakh bracket.
