New Maruti WagonR pulls in 12,000 bookings in less than 10 days

It’s not even 10 days since Maruti Suzuki opened bookings for the all-new WagonR, and the tall boy hatchback has already amassed over 12,000 bookings. Bookings for the car commenced on the 14th of January, 2019. The all-new Maruti WagonR was launched earlier today, at a competitive price tag of Rs. 4.19 lakhs. Maruti Suzuki has already begun dispatching the car to dealer stockyards across India, and deliveries will begin immediately.

Looking at the booking numbers, it would be advisable to book early if you want early delivery. Like most high demand Maruti cars, waiting times for the all-new WagonR could stretch to a few months, especially in the next 6 months or so. The WagonR rivals the Hyundai Santro, and is priced slightly higher. Maruti Suzuki’s justification for the higher price tag is that the WagonR is significantly larger than the Santro.

Also, the new WagonR offers a much more powerful petrol engine option in the form of the 1.2 liter K-Series motor that puts out 82 Bhp-113 Nm. This engine, which the WagonR shares with the Maruti Swift and the Baleno, should make the car extremely peppy as the latest version has gotten over 50 kilograms lighter. The lighter weight is thanks to the HEARTECT platform that the new WagonR now uses.

The HEARTECT platform uses high tensile steel which is stiffer and lighter than regular steel. This is the reason that the new WagonR has managed to get lighter despite growing in size, both in terms of length and wheelbase. The new WagonR has another engine on offer – the tried and tested 1 liter K-Series petrol unit (67 Bhp-90 Nm) – which has been carried over from the older model.

Both engines get 5 speed manual and AMT options. The new WagonR will also be available with a CNG option. In due course of time, we expect Maruti to begin shipping out the petrol-LPG variant of the WagonR as well. This is because a large part of India remains uncovered by CNG dispening outlets, and LPG is a good alternative. Also, an all-electric version of the WagonR is under development, and will be launched next year.

The 2020 Auto Expo will be the place where Maruti debuts the electric variant of the WagonR. The WagonR Electric will be the first electric car from Maruti Suzuki, and the car is expected to have a decent range for everyday usability. A sub-Rs. 10 lakh price tag is also anticipated. Maruti has tied up with Toyota and Denso for design and development of electric vehicles for the Indian market. The WagonR Electric will be the first among such cars.
