The Mercedes Benz CLA luxury sedan will make a touch down into India on the 22nd of January 2015. The CLA will be the first car with which Mercedes Benz will begin its 2015 launch blitz. Our sources suggest that the CLA will be priced and positioned above the Audi A3 sedan as Mercedes Benz wants to retain its positioning as a premium luxury car brand. Many variants of the CLA will occupy the positioning that the previous-generation C-Class sedan once occupied, even as the current, W205 generation of the C-Class has been pegged higher up the price spectrum.
The Mercedes Benz CLA sedan is based on the MFA platform and is the last in the quartet of affordable luxury cars that Mercedes Benz had lined up for India way back in 2012. The car will join the likes of the A-Class, B-Class and GLA models, but will differ significantly in one aspect. Mercedes Benz will assemble the CLA sedan at its Chakan factory, off Pune, a distinction the sedan does not share with its other MFA platform siblings. The CLA sold in India will be front wheel driven with the all wheel drive layout reserved exclusively for the high performance CLA 45 AMG model.
In terms of engines and transmissions, 2 liter-4 cylinder turbo petrol (181 Bhp-300 Nm) and 2.2 liter-4 cylinder turbo diesel (134 Bhp-300 Nm) motors will be served up, with 7 speed twin clutch automatic gearboxes being standard fare on both the mills. The CLA sedan’s interiors will be similar to that of the A-Class hatchback, with the same safety feature kit on offer. Apart from a modicum of performance and luxury, the car’s other selling point will be its looks. The CLA’s swoopy, coupe like roofline is inspired by the W222 S-Class luxury saloon, and this is one design cue that is becoming standard across new Mercedes Benz sedans.
