Mercedes Benz India will launch the high performance GL 63 AMG version of its flagship luxury SUV on the 15th of April, 2014. The SUV will be joining Mercedes Benz India’s other AMG cars such as the C 63 AMG, the G 63 AMG, the E 63 AMG and the SLK 55 AMG. A twin-turbocharged 5.5 litre V8 motor is what propels this performance oriented luxury SUV. The SUV will dismiss the 0-100 Kmph sprint in a sportscar like 4.9 seconds before hitting an electronically limited 250 Kmph. All this, with a weight close to 2.5 tons.
The twin turbo V8 petrol engine has a maximum power output of 557 Bhp on offer, alongside an equally mammoth torque figure of 760 NM. A seven-speed 7G-Tronic AMG automatic transmission sends the torque to all four wheels in a 40/60 front-rear biased system. The motor comes with a spray-guided direct petrol injection, piezo injectors, twin turbo-charging, air/water intercooling, an all-aluminium crankcase, an alternator management system and a start/stop system.
An ‘AMG ride control’ package which gets an adaptive, self-levelling air suspension alongside active roll-bars handles suspension duties. There will be three suspension modes – “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus”, which can be chosen as per the driver’s needs. The SUV gets an electro-mechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering while braking is handled by an AMG high-performance braking system. In short, this luxury SUV has AMG written all over it.
The luxury SUV rides on 21 inch alloy wheels that are a blend of style and functionality. Top notch leather upholstery with AMG badging is standard on the SUV and the badging also serves as a major detailing difference when compared with the regular version of the Mercedes Benz GL.
Like all other AMG cars, the GL 63 AMG SUV will be imported into India as a completely built unit. Expect to pay northwards of a crore rupees for this high performance bruiser.
