The BMW X6 luxury crossover was the car that opened up an all-new niche segment of SUVs that had a coupe-like roofline. The crossover has been a lone ranger in the segment until now. All this is set to change. Mercedes Benz has unveiled the production version of GLE Coupe based on the M-Class SUV. The GLE was showcased earlier this year, in concept guise. The M-Class will henceforth be renamed as GLE and the GLE Coupe will be positioned as a top-of-the line variant. On the production model of the GLE, Mercedes Benz has retained majority of the design elements from the concept version and the crossover is quite the looker.
The GLE Coupe has the stance of a SUV and a swooping roof line of a coupe. The front fascia instantly reminds you of the new design philosophy of Mercedes Benz which has a bold grille and a three pointed star up front, along with tapered headlamps. The creases on the front bonnet further add to the aggressive stance of the crossover. The rear of the car continues the aggressive styling treatment and Mercedes Benz seems to have achieved its aim of differentiating its various cars through different designs.
As the GLE crossover will be an extension of the M-Class, the interiors resemble the ones on the SUV. However, there is a lot of stuff on the GLE that is specific to it. For example, the AC vents are new and so is the steering wheel. The nappa leather clad seats are new the infotainment display is also new. You also get wood, satin and aluminium accents on the inside. The GLE coupe will also spawn an AMG Sports variant, which will be the first car under the newly established AMG Sports line.
The GLE 450 AMG will be the moniker for the above mentioned variant and it will come with a twin turbo V6 petrol motor churning out 367 Hp of maximum power and 520 Nm of peak torque. It will be mated to a 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox which will send the power to all the wheels using the 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
The regular petrol variant will come with the moniker, GLE 400 4MATIC, and will offer a power output of 333 Hp and a torque output of 480 Nm. For diesel lovers, there will be a GLE 350D 4MATIC diesel variant which will have a power output of 258 Hp and a peak torque rating of 620 Nm. The GLE Coupe crossover will come to India next year. Expect it to be priced around the Rs. 1 crore mark.
