Mercedes Benz India has stopped CKD assembly of the outgoing, W204 C-Class luxury sedan at its Chakan assembly facility, off Pune. The stoppage in assembly comes at a time when Mercedes Benz dealers across India are working hard to clear stocks of the W204 C-Class, in order to make way for the next-generation W205 model. MotoringWorld reports that the next-generation, W205 C-Class sedan will arrive into India in January 2015, close on the heels of the CLA sedan.
Designed to look like the baby S-Class as has been the case with its previous iterations, the 2015 C-Class sedan has undergone a major weight reduction treatment, through the use of high strength aluminium in place of steel across various parts of its structure. Shedding over 100 kilograms of weight is said to have made the 2015 C-Class peppier and more fuel efficient, even as interior room has gotten larger owing to the larger dimensions of the new model.
In terms of engines, the 2015 C-Class will continue to be offered with petrol and turbo diesel options. The petrol motor will be a 2 liter unit, capable of 181 Bhp-300 Nm outputs. The petrol engine will power the C200 variant, and will use a 7G-Tronic, 7 speed automatic gearbox to power the rear wheels of the sedan. The diesel motor of the 2015 C-Class will power the C220 CDI variant, and will displace 2.2 liters.
168 Bhp-400 Nm outputs and a 7 speed automatic gearbox will drive the rear wheels of the car. This engine is likely to get a more powerful, 204 Bhp-500 Nm state of tune, in the C250 CDI variant. New interior trims to up the luxury quotient and a new COMAND infotainment interface will be major changes on the 2015 C-Class. In terms of safety features, the 4th generation C-Class is likely to gain new equipment in terms of both active and passive safety aids.
A high performance, C63 AMG variant of the 2015 W205 C-Class is also likely to arrive into India next year, given the fact that the BMW M3 and M4 cars are just around the corner. The C63 AMG iteration of the W205 C-Class will use he new 4 liter-V8 twin turbo petrol engine that Mercedes Benz debuted in the AMG GT sportscar. Pricing of the 2015 C-Class is likely to take an upward trajectory considering the fact that the CLA sedan will slot in below the C-Class in the sub-30 lakh rupee category. However, the new C-Class is likely to start below the 35 lakh rupee mark for the C200 CGI variant, going all the way up to more than crore rupees for the high performance C63 AMG variant. Except the C63 AMG, all W205 C-Class sedans sold in India will be assembled at Mercedes Benz’s Chakan factory.
