10 features the MG Hector SUV has that the Tata Harrier does NOT!

The Tata Harrier has been having a pretty good time since its launch and is the best selling car in the segment right now. However, MG plans to spoil the party for Tata by launching the Hector SUV next month. While the Harrier itself is a brilliant SUV and comes with numerous useful features, the Hector is nowhere behind in any aspect. If nothing, the Hector leads over the Harrier in certain areas. Here is a list of 10 such aspects where the MG Hector offers better than the Tata Harrier.

10.8-inch infotainment with AI

MG has fitted the Hector with a best in class 10.8 inch portrait style mounted touch screen. This infotainment system is Artificial Intelligence-powered and comes with an eSIM that keeps the vehicle connected to the Internet all the time. This allows the vehicle to stream music, get system updates and also track the vehicle and control it remotely through a smartphone. Further, the AI gives certain impressive features to the infotainment like active voice control among other 50 plus connected features.

Hybrid engine option: better fuel efficiency

MG is leaving no stone unturned for their debut vehicle in India. The Hector will be the first vehicle in its segment to get a 48V mild hybrid system. MG claims that this system will provide extra torque assistance of up to 20 Nm whenever required. It will work together with functions like engine auto start-stop, regenerative braking and e-boost. All of this would reduce the emissions by 12 per cent and offers a better driving experience. The hybrid tech will be present with the petrol engine which is a 1.5-litre unit churning out 143 PS and 250 Nm and comes paired with a 6-speed manual box.

Larger in size

Plain and simple, the MG Hector is larger in size the Harrier. The only dimensional factor where Harrier leaves the Hector behind is in width. Talking about the MG Hector, it measures 4,655×1,835×1,760 mm (LXWXH) and has a ground clearance of 192 mm. The Tata Harrier, on the other hand, measures 4,598×1,894×1,706 mm (LXWXH) and has a ground clearance of 205 mm.

Larger wheelbase and more interior space

Not only is the MG Hector much larger than the Tata Harrier, but it also has a larger wheelbase than the latter. The Hector has a wheelbase of 2,750 mm whereas the Tata Harrier has a wheelbase of 2741 mm. These figures have a marginal difference between them but still, the Hector has a 9mm longer wheelbase. While this would not make a hell lot of difference in the interior space, the overall larger dimension of the Hector hints towards more cabin space for sure.

More powerful diesel engine

The MG Hector and the Tata Harrier both share the same diesel engine, which is a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre unit. However, on the Hector, this engine generates a maximum of 170 PS of power and 350 Nm of torque. On the other hand, Tata detuned the engine for use on Harrier in order to achieve better fuel efficiency. Therefore, it churns out 140 PS of power along with 350 Nm of torque on the Harrier.

Large Panoramic sunroof

Of late, sunroofs on cars has become the latest fad in India. More and more people now want a car equipped with sunroof for the open air feel it gives. The Tata Harrier, sadly, misses out on this and does not come with a sunroof, even as an option. However, MG has equipped the Hector with a massive panoramic sunroof which lifts up its appeal by quite a margin. The panoramic sunroof on the Hector will be the biggest seen in this price range yet.

Bigger boot space

With the large body it comes with, the MG Hector then naturally has a bigger boot space than the Tata Harrier. The Tata Harrier comes with a boot space of 425 litres, which is decent if not good. However, the Hector blows things out of proportion with its 587 litres of boot space. MG has planned to launch a 7 seater version of the Hector which will make use of all that space behind the second row by placing one more row of seats. For now, the 5-seater Hector has one humongous boot.

8 colour ambient lightning

This again is a feature usually found in high-end cars. The Hector will be the first car in this price range to offer ambient lighting without up to eight different colour options. This means that the owners can select up to eight different preset colours for the ambient lighting according to their mood. It makes the cabin feel very upmarket and from a class higher above.

Powered tailgate

A powered tailgate is a feature that more expensive and high-end cars come with. MG has equipped the Hector with a powered tailgate for which it even released a special TVC with its brand Ambassador Benedict Cumberbatch. While many may say that it is just a feature for number count, a powered tailgate does prove to be useful in certain condition like when you are carrying heavy luggage. It may not be a deciding factor but when splurging nearly 15 lakhs on a vehicle, having a few extras which give you a taste of higher life are certainly welcome.

360-degree camera

Another striking feature that the MG Hector has but the Tata Harrier does not have is a 360-degree camera. This feature gives a bird’s eye view of the car’s surroundings on the infotainment system and one can see all around the car at once. Coupled with the large infotainment system of the Hector, this feature becomes more useful. Especially for a large vehicle like the Hector, a 360-degree camera can act as a boon in crowded city driving.
