MG Motor India’s first car in India, which is also very highly successful is currently powered by a sourced engine from Fiat. The all-new MG Hector’s diesel engine option is not made in-house. The 2.0-litre diesel engine powering the Hector comes from Fiat India. The same engine also powers the diesel versions of Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier. Currently, MG Motors is working on a brand-new diesel engine, which will power the upcoming MG Motors Maxus D90 in the Indian market. It will then make its way to the MG Hector in the Indian market. It will bring an end to Fiat India and MG Motor India’s supply contract.
The MG Motor Maxus D90 is an all-new vehicle that will take on the likes on the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour in the Indian market. According to ACI, MG Motor India thinks that this heavy and brawny SUV will not get enough juice from the current diesel engine that powers the MG Hector in the Indian market. The 2.0-litre diesel engine that powers the MG Hector currently generates a maximum power of 170 PS and 350 Nm of peak torque.
The Maxus D90 is currently powered by a 2.-litre turbo-charged petrol engine that generates a maximum power of 224 PS and peak torque of 360 Nm. However, SAIC, the parent company of MG Motors India has recently developed a 2.0-litre twin-turbo engine that generates a maximum power of massive 218 Bhp and 480 Nm of earth-moving torque. The engine was recently showcased at the Guangzhou Motor Show. It will be introduced in the Maxus D90 in 2020-2021. Internationally, it will get a different petrol engine and it will be launched before the Indian market.
The new Maxus D90 will become the most expensive MG Motor India vehicle after its launch. The vehicle is expected to get a price tag of between Rs 27 lakhs and Rs 30 lakhs. It will put the MG Maxus in direction competition of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour.
The interesting part about this is the same engine will also power the updated version of the MG Hector in the Indian market. The same engine will also power the 7–seater version of the MG Hector which will launch in the Indian market in 2020. It should be noted that the Chinese-version of the MG Hector has already received a facelift and the same facelifted version is expected to make to the Indian market in coming months too. However, the new look may only launch with the 7-seater version before the launch of the facelifted version of the MG Hector.
