Most times, SUVs and fuel efficiency do not go hand and hand. However, there are a few affordable SUVs that can run for kilometer after kilometer for every litre of fuel. We bring you ten such SUVs available in India.

Honda WR-V

The Honda WR-V was launched last year and the vehicle has become one of the best sellers from the brand in India. The WR-V is available in both petrol and diesel engine options and the diesel-powered WR-V is the most fuel-efficient compact SUV in India.

Honda uses the same 1.5-litre diesel engine in the WR-V that produces a maximum of 99 Bhp – 205 Nm. It gets a 6-speed manual transmission. As per ARAI, the WR-V returns 25.5 km/l. There is also a 1.2-litre petrol engine that returns a maximum of 17.5 km/l.

Maruti S-Cross

Maruti launched the facelifted version of its flagship vehicle last year. The S-Cross received quite a few changes on the outside but the biggest change is the addition of SHVS mild hybrid system. The crossover is now available with only one engine option as the bigger 1.6-litre engine has been dropped.  The S-Cross now gets 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 88.5 Bhp – 200 Nm. Because of the addition of the mild hybrid system, the car returns a maximum of 25.1 km/l.

Maruti Vitara Brezza

Maruti entered the highly competitive segment of sub 4-meter compact SUV with the Vitara Brezza and the vehicle is extremely famous in the market. The Brezza is only available with one engine option paired with a manual transmission. The Vitara Brezza is powered by a 1.3-litre diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 88.5 Bhp and 200 Nm of peak torque. The Brezza returns a maximum of 24.3 km/l as per ARAI.

Tata Nexon

Tata also jumped in the sub 4-meter compact SUV segment last year with the Nexon. The Nexon has gained good popularity in the market because of its unique looks. Both the petrol and diesel engines are available with the Nexon. The diesel engine is a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that generates a maximum of 108 Bhp – 260 Nm. It returns a maximum of 23.97 km/l. The petrol engine is a 1.2-litre turbocharged unit that returns a maximum of 17.88 km/l as per ARAI.

Ford EcoSport

Ford launched the facelifted EcoSport in 2017. The car came with many changes on the outside and the inside. Ford also introduced a new petrol engine with the new EcoSport. However, the diesel-powered EcoSport remains more fuel efficient. The 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine produces a maximum of 98.5 Bhp and 205 Nm. The EcoSport returns a maximum of 23 km/l with the diesel engine. Ford also offers 1.5-litre petrol engine that generates a maximum of 121.3 Bhp and 150 Nm that returns a maximum of 17 km/l.

Honda BR-V

The BR-V is the Honda’s offering the Maruti Ertiga. The 7-seater SUV is based on the Brio platform and is powered by both petrol and diesel engine options. The diesel engine is a 1.5-litre iDTEC unit that produces a maximum of 98 Bhp – 200 Nm and a 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces a maximum of 119 Bhp – 145 Nm. The diesel engine returns a maximum of 21.9 km/l.

Hyundai Creta

The Creta is one of the best selling SUVs in India. The popular car is available with three engine options – 1.4-litre diesel, 1.6-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol. The 1.4-litre diesel engine is quite efficient and returns a maximum of 21.38 km/l. The engine generates a maximum of 88.7 Bhp and 220 Nm of torque. It is available only with a manual transmission.

Nissan Terrano

Nissan Terrano is the rebadged version of the Renault Duster. It is built on the same platform and is powered by the same engine options too but it is slightly more fuel efficient than the Duster. The Terrano diesel is powered by a 1.5-litre engine that is tuned in 85 PS and 110 PS output. The 85 PS version is the most fuel efficient and returns a maximum of 20.5 km/l.

Renault Captur

The newly launched Renault Captur is the flagship of the French manufacturer in India. The SUV is based on the same platform as the Duster and is powered by the 1.5-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol engine options. The diesel Captur is offered in only one state of tune. The engine produces a maximum of 110 PS and 240 Nm and gets the only 6-speed manual transmission. The diesel version returns a maximum of 20.37 km/l.

Renault Duster

The Duster paved the success story of Renault in India. The compact SUV is quite famous in the market and competes with the Hyundai Creta. The Duster is powered by 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine option. The diesel engine is available in both 85 PS and 110 PS power tune. The Duster 110PS is also available with an AMT but the 85 PS version only offers a 5-speed manual transmission. The 85 PS manual version returns a maximum of 19.87 km/l.
