Mitsubishi has always been known for its performance-centric sedans and tough-as-nails SUVs.The Pajero SUV has managed to attain a cult status worldwide. However, it is the Outlander that has been gaining buyers steadily in markets around the globe. Mitsubishi did sell the first and second generation versions of the Outlander in India, and the Japanese automaker could just bring in the 3rd generation model to India shortly. This time around, diesel power is likely to rule the roost as far as the Outlander is concerned.
At the launch of the Pajero Sport Automatic, which happened last week, Mitsubishi disclosed that it was considering launching the Outlander diesel in India soon. The Outlander variants sold in India thus far were powered by a petrol engine. Now, petrol engines and SUVs don’t really go together in India. So, the Outlander was a dud seller. With a diesel heart though, the Outlander could make a big comeback.
The Outlander Diesel that is sold in the UK comes with a 2.2 liter-4 cylinder turbo diesel engine that makes 148 Bhp-380 Nm. The engine gets 6 speed manual and automatic gearboxes. It is this engine that Mitsubishi India is considering for 3rd Generation Outlander lined up for the Indian market. The Outlander Diesel is expected to be slotted beneath the Pajero Sport in terms of positioning. A price tag close to the 20 lakh rupee mark is likely for the crossover.
While the previous iteration of the Outlander sold in India was a five seater, the 3rd generation model is significantly larger. The crossover also adds seats to take the total number of seats on offer to 7. With additional room on the inside and a diesel engine to boot, the Outlander promises to be a steady seller for Mitsubishi in India. The crossover is expected to be imported through the CKD kit route, with assembly to happen at Hindustan Motors’ Tiruvallur factory.
