Mitsubishi will launch its third SUV for the Indian market – the Outlander crossover – sometime before the middle of next year. The 2018 Outlander will be imported through the completely knocked down (CKD) kit route. It is expected to be priced close to Rs. 30 lakhs. It will have a seven seat layout, and will compete with the new Honda CR-V, which will also offer 7 seats, and petrol and diesel engine options.
However, the 2018 Outlander that will be sold in India will be a petrol-only model in the initial stages. A diesel engine could be added later. The petrol engine to be offered on this SUV is a 2.4 liter MIVEC unit that is naturally aspirated. Peak power is rated at 169 Bhp while peak torque is rated at 225 Nm. The SUV gets an all wheel drive layout, and a CVT automatic transmission with 6 stepped shifts. Paddle shifters will be offered as standard.
In terms of safety equipment, ABS, EBD, traction control, six airbags, hill start assist and active stability control will be offered as standard. Other notable features on the SUV include keyless entry, a push button start, automatic headlamps and wipers, an electric sunroof, an electric parking brake, leather-clad seats, twin-zone automatic climate control, a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 710W stereo.
When the 2018, third-generation Outlander launches in India, it will be the second time that Mitsubishi is offering this SUV here. The second generation model of the Outlander was sold in India during 2008, and was discontinued after 4 years of production due to poor sales. Even back then, the Outlander was a petrol-only model, in a market that preferred diesel engined SUVs. It remains to be seen how the new, 2018 Outlander will do in India without a diesel engine being offered. The new SUV has already been listed on Mitsubishi India’s website.
