Mitsubishi India is a fringe automaker that offers only three products, and all of them are high-end luxury SUVs. The Japanese automaker’s largest selling vehicle – the Pajero Sport – has gotten a mild facelift through the new Splash edition. Like its name suggests, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Splash edition is a stylistic tweak of the SUV. The automaker now allows customers to choose from over 30 different colours and patterns for the Pajero Sport. These patterns and colours are essentially graphics that can be stickered on to the SUV, making it look a lot more appealing than its plain, twin-tone paint job.
This customisation program is one of its kind in the luxury SUV segment, where the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport competes with the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. The Pajero Sport SUV is mechanically unchanged. It has is a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with outputs of 175 Bhp and 400 Nm (350 Nm on the automatic variants). This motor gets two gearbox options – a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed torque converter automatic. A four-wheel drive layout with an electric shift-on-the-fly feature is offered on the manual gearbox equipped variants. When the four-wheel drive mode is not activated, the Pajero Sport is rear-wheel driven.
The SUV sits on a rugged ladder frame chassis and offers three rows of seats that can seat seven people. Ground clearance is 215 mm. Mitsubishi assembles the Pajero Sport at Hindustan Motors’ Tiruvallur factory, near Chennai. The Japanese SUV is imported into India through the completely knocked down (CKD) kit route. The SUV is sold in two variants, Standard and Select Plus. Prices of the Pajero Sport Standard Splash edition start from Rs. 28.85 lakh for the automatic variant. The manual variant with 4X4 is priced at Rs. 28.32 lakh. The Select Plus Automatic and Manual variants are priced at Rs. 30.02 and Rs. 30.50 lakh, respectively. All prices are ex-showroom Delhi figures.
