Mitsubishi is poised to make a resurgence of sorts in India. The Japanese automaker is set to expand its dealership reach across the country, by more than 50 % in the next few months. By March 2015, the automaker plans to have 48 dealerships in place around India, up from the current number of 31.
Currently, Mitsubishi dealers have just one car to sell in the form of the Pajero Sport SUV, and a handful of vehicles to service in the form of the Lancer, Outlander, Pajero SFX, Montero and the Cedia. Most of the aforementioned cars are low volume offerings, which means that Mitsubishi dealers need more motivation and revenue to stay in business.
This can happen with new products in the pipeline. Mitsubishi is intent on doing just this, by launching 2 new SUVs in India. One SUV will be slotted under the Pajero Sport, with the other being positioned higher. Both new Mitsubishi SUVs will be launched in India next year. However, other details about the new Mitsubishi SUVs have not been revealed.
The only indications from Mitsubishi is that the new SUVs will be all-new models. In terms of new SUVs below and above the Pajero Sport, Mitsubishi could launch the all-new Outlander, which is already on sale in many markets abroad, and the all-new Pajero, which is a replacement to the Montero.
The new launches will give Mitsubishi dealers in India something to look forward to, in terms of revenue growth due to additional sales and service opportunities. Mitsubishi’s new launches will also come as a relief to existing and prospective customers, reaffirming their belief in the Japanese brand, known as a purveyor of quality automobiles that feature good reliability and solid engineering.
Mitsubishi will continue to focus on SUVs for the next couple of years, after which an entry into other car categories will be explored. On the global front, the automaker has tied up with Renault-Nissan for a mid size sedan while the Mirage hatchback and Attrage sedan are vehicles intended for the budget car buyers.
