The AMTs are much more convenient to drive due to the clutchless shifts and at the same time, they are not as expensive as the conventional AMTs, making them very accessible to the budget conscious buyers. There is one more advantage of the AMTs over regular automatics and that is the fuel efficiency. AMTs are as efficient as their manual counterparts. Entry level hatchback

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10: 24.07 km/l

The entry-level hatchback segment is flooded with AMT options. Manufacturers like Maruti, Datsun, Renault, and Tata all have their AMT offerings in the segment. The most fuel-efficient AMT of all the petrol entry-level hatchbacks is the Alto K10. The AMT version of the Alto K10 is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine that produces a maximum power of 67 Bhp and peak torque of 90 Nm. It returns a maximum of 24.07 km/l as per ARAI certification. It is just ahead of the Renault Kwid AMT that returns a maximum of 24.04 km/l.

Premium entry-level hatchback

Maruti Suzuki Ignis: 28.8 km/l

Maruti launched the premium hatchback last year and it is sold through the Nexa dealerships. The trendy looking car gets AMT versions with both the petrol and diesel engine options. The car diesel variant is the most fuel efficient automatic that you can get in India. It is powered by a 1.3-litre engine that generates a maximum of 74 Bhp – 190 Nm. The petrol variant of the vehicle is powered by a 1.2-litre engine and churns out a maximum of 20.89 km/l.

Mid-Size hatchback

Maruti Suzuki Swift: 28.4 km/l

Maruti has launched the all-new Swift in India earlier this month and for the first time ever, the car comes gets an automatic engine option. The all-new Swift becomes much lighter than the previous generation of the car that increases its fuel efficiency by leaps. The diesel Swift is powered by the same 1.3-litre multijet diesel engine that generates a maximum of 74 Bhp – 190 Nm. The diesel AMT Swift returns a maximum of 28.4 km/l making it the third-best fuel-efficient automatic in India. The petrol AMT version of the vehicle returns a maximum of 22.0 km/l.

Compact sedan

Maruti Dzire: 28.48 km/l

Maruti launched the all-new Dzire last year that is based on an all-new platform. Due to the new platform, the Dzire has lost a good amount of weight and has become much more fuel efficient. It is the most fuel-efficient sedan in India and is the second most fuel efficient automatic car. The diesel version of the Dzire is the most fuel-efficient automatic car in India. It is powered by a 1.3-litre diesel engine that generates 74 Bhp – 190 Nm and gets an AMT. The 1.2-litre petrol engine with AMT returns a maximum of 22 km/l.

Compact SUV

Mahindra TUV 300: 18.49 km/l

Mahindra’s sub 4-meter compact SUV, the TUV is the most fuel efficient sub 4-meter compact SUV in India. The car is powered by mHawk100 twin-stage turbo diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 100 Bhp and peak torque of 240 Nm. It gets an optional 5-speed AMT. The TUV has a good power out and yet has a high fuel efficiency of 18.49 km/l.

Mid-size SUV

Renault Duster: 19.72 km/l

The Renault Duster is quite famous in India. The SUV is available with both petrol and diesel engine options and both of them get automatic transmission option. The diesel engine, which is a 1.5-litre unit that develops 109 Bhp and 245 Nm. The AMT version of the vehicle returns a high of 19.72 km/l. Even the Duster petrol gets an automatic transmission but that is a CVT option.
