Most fuel efficient diesel SUVs in India: From Honda WR-V, to Maruti Brezza and EcoSport

November was the month when SUVs (as they are understood by the Indian consumer) finally overtook sales of hatches and sedans put together. With the rising number of SUVs on offer in the market, there are many people who keep fuel efficiency as a top priority while buying SUVs. We bring you top ten diesel SUVs with highest fuel efficiency.

Honda WR-V

ARAI Mileage: 25.1 km/l

Honda WR-V has become very popular in the market since its launch earlier this year. The WR-V is based on the Jazz but looks much wider, taller and longer than the Jazz. It also looks quite intimidating. It is the first ever sub 4-meter compact SUV launched by Honda in India.

The WR-V is the best selling R-V model in India. It is also the only SUV to offer sunroof in the segment.  It gets 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces a maximum of 80 Bhp – 110 Nm. The 1.5-litre diesel is also available with the WR-V. It produces a maximum of 99 Bhp – 200 Nm.

Maruti S-Cross

ARAI Mileage: 25.1 km/l

Maruti launched the facelift version of the S-Cross earlier this year. The car misses out on the more powerful 1.6-litre engine but the 1.3-litre engine now gets SHVS mild hybrid system. The new S-Cross gets design changes like new grille and updated headlamps. It produces a maximum of 89 Bhp – 200 Nm and is only available with manual transmission.

Maruti Brezza

ARAI Mileage: 24.3 km/l

The Vitara Brezza is high-volume selling SUV. It is Maruti’s first sub 4-meter compact SUV in the market and is highly popular in the market. It does not get a petrol engine option. The SUV is powered by 1.3-litre diesel engine sourced from Fiat. It produces 89 Bhp and 200 Nm and is only available with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Ford EcoSport

ARAI Mileage: 23 km/l

Ford launched the refreshed EcoSport last month, and it is already in the top three number among the SUVs in India. The EcoSport is powered by a 1.5-litre 99 Bhp – 205 Nm producing diesel engine with only a manual transmission and a 1.5-litre petrol engine that churns out 120 Bhp – 150 Nm. It gets a conventional automatic transmission with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Honda BR-V

ARAI Mileage: 21.9 km/l

The BR-V is the Honda’s offering the Maruti Ertiga. The 7-seater SUV is based on the Brio platform and is powered by both petrol and diesel engine options. The diesel engine is a 1.5-litre iDTEC unit that produces a maximum of 98 Bhp – 200 Nm and a 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces a maximum of 119 Bhp – 145 Nm.

Tata Nexon

ARAI Mileage: 21.5 km/l

Tata’s first ever sub 4-meter compact SUV has become quite popular in the market. The Nexon boasts of unique styling and many first-in-the-segment features like tri-colour body and umbrella holder. The Nexon is powered by a 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine that produces 108 Bhp – 260 Nm and a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 108 Bhp – 170 Nm. Both of them gets the 6-speed manual transmission.

Hyundai Creta

ARAI Mileage: 21.38 km/l

The Creta is the largest selling SUV above the 4-metre segment. The Creta is extremely popular in the segment. The Creta is quite powerful and is powerful and is powered by 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines. The petrol engine produces a maximum of 121 Bhp – 151 Nm. The diesel engine produces a maximum of 126 Bhp – 260 Nm. There is also a 1.4-litre diesel that produces a maximum of 89 Bhp – 220 Nm, which is the most efficient engine of the three.

Nissan Terrano

ARAI Mileage: 20.5 km/l

Nissan Terrano is the rebadged version of the Renault Duster. It is built on the same platform and is powered by the same engine options too but it is slightly more fuel efficient than the Duster. The Terrano diesel is powered by a 1.5-litre engine that is tuned in 85 PS and 110 PS output. The 85 PS version is the most fuel efficient and returns a maximum of 20.5 km/l.

Renault Captur

ARAI Mileage: 20.37 km/l

The newly launched Renault Captur is the flagship of the French manufacturer in India. The SUV is based on the same platform as the Duster and is powered by the 1.5-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol engine options. The diesel Captur is offered in only one state of tune. The engine produces a maximum of 110 PS and 240 Nm and gets the only 6-speed manual transmission.

Renault Duster

ARAI Mileage: 19.87 km/l

The Duster paved the success story of Renault in India. The compact SUV is quite famous in the market and competes with the Hyundai Creta. The Duster is powered by 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine option. The diesel engine is available in both 85 PS and 110 PS power tune. The Duster 110PS is also available with an AMT but the 85 PS version only offers a 5-speed manual transmission.
