It is primarily meant for taxi fleet operators as the new Dzire has taken its place. It has an 1197 cc engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Other affordable and value for money petrol sedans include the new Maruti Suzuki Dzire (Rs.4.88 lakh), the Tata Indigo eCS (Rs.4.77 lakh), the Mahindra Verito (Rs.5.27 lakh) and the Ford Classic (Rs.5.27 lakh).

Cheapest diesel sedan

Even when it comes to diesel sedans, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire diesel (LDI) which starts at Rs.5.54 lakh is the most affordable and value for money car. The diesel Dzire tour is powered by a 1,248 cc engine and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. This motor makes 75 bhp of power at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm.

The most value for money, spacious sedan under Rs.10 lakh is the Nissan Sunny. In fact it has more space then even some sedans that are above its price band. The petrol Sunny starts at Rs.5.93 lakh while the diesel Sunny starts at Rs.8.11 lakh.

The Sunny has amazingly spacious interiors and there is ample space in the rear seats even with the front seats pushed back completely. The base Sunny petrol comes with features like ABS, EBD and a single airbag, while the base diesel has 2 airbags apart from ABS and EBD. The Sunny also comes with a deep and wide 490 litre boot, enough to carry luggage even for long road trips.

If space is the main criteria for you then no other vehicle in the price band comes close to the Sunny. If you want a little more attractive design then you may consider the Renault Scala which is exactly the same as the Sunny in terms of space.

The most feature loaded diesel sedan under Rs.10 lakh is the new Maruti Suzuki Dzire (ZDI). It costs Rs. 7.34 lakh and comes with climate control, all four power windows, adjustable seats, central locking, anti glare inside rear view mirror, ABS, EBD, 2 Airbags, Ipod Dock, steering mounted audio controls and a music system with 6 speakers. The top end Dzire petrol (ZXI) costs Rs. 6.30 lakh and comes with the same features.

Other value for money cars based on features includes the Nissan Sunny petrol XV and diesel XV which cost Rs.7.86 lakh and Rs.8.93 lakh respectively. The Ford Classic Titanium which costs Rs.7.82 lakh is also a value for money car for its features.

Most powerful sedan

The Hyundai Verna 1.6 Crdi sports a 1582 cc engine that is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and makes 126 bhp of power at 4,000 rpm and 260 Nm of torque at 1,900-2,750 rpm. It is the most powerful diesel sedan under Rs. 10 lakh and has a price tag of Rs.9.35 lakh.

Other value for money yet powerful cars include the Skoda Rapid Diesel which costs Rs. 8.19 lakh and makes 105 bhp of power at 4,400 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 1,500-2,500 rpm.

The most powerful petrol sedan too is the Verna which costs Rs.8.02 lakh. It comes with a 1,591 cc motor that makes 121 bhp of peak power at 6,300 rpm and 155 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. It is followed by the Honda City EMT priced at Rs.7.82 which is powered by a 1,497 cc engine belting out 116 bhp of power at 6,600 rpm and 146 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm.
