Audi will launch a refreshed A4 sedan by the year 2014. The new A4 is internally codenamed the B9 and will be the first vehicle from Audi’s stables to features the new electric-Quattro drive train with two hybrid options.

The new A4 is indistinguishably Audi in its design language and overall appearance, reminiscent of the A6 sedan but boasts of radically new technology.

The next-gen A5 will be 100kg lighter than the present model, weighing in at roughly 1,330 kgs (Kerb weight). This will show in the way the car performs, handles and even in the fuel economy is expected to go up.

Moreover the new e-quattro system that the car is going to be equipped with marks the launch of Audi’s first plug-in hybrid system. It will no longer have mechanical differentials and prop-shafts and will instead feature an electrically driven rear axle. The two electric motors on the new A4 together will deliver 136bhp of power to the rear wheels. The A4 will sport a 2.0-litre petrol engine that will churn out 225 bhp of power and an electric motor. It will also come with a 2.0-litre TDI motor that will make 197bhp of power. Also read: Audi A8 L 4.2 unveiled, priced at Rs. 1 crore

The new Audi A4 will be better equipped to combat its BMW and Mercedes Benz competitors. It will be a much better car to drive and will also be more spacious. Let’s hope that this lighter, faster, stronger and stiffer Audi A4 makes its way to India soon.

The A4 will compete with the Mercedes Benz C-Class and the BMW 3-Series. BMW recently launched its sixth generation 3-Series sedan in India priced between Rs. 28.9 lakh and Rs. 37.9 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. It will be interesting to see whether BMW’s new 3-Series will remain equally lucrative two years from now and be able to compete with the new A4.
