New cars & SUVs coming to India in the next six months

While there have been a couple of important launches this year, the market is yet to reach its frantic pace. With important product launches lined up for the rest of the year, the pace is all set to pick up. We look at the new cars and SUVs coming to the Indian market in the next six months.

Starting with the smallest:

Datsun redi-GO

Datsun Redigo 3

USP: Fresh styling, in-cabin space

Launch: June 2016

Based on the same platform as the Renault Kwid, the Datsun redi-GO is expected to be priced competitively. It boasts a better ground clearance (of 185 mm), will get the same 0.8-liter engine, but certainly has distinct styling. Further details will be out closer to the launch in June this year; bookings will begin next month.

Maruti Ignis

Suzuki Ignis

USP: Micro-SUV looks

Expected launch: September/October 2016

Launched earlier in the Japanese market, the Suzuki Ignis will make its way to India later this year (festive season). With its micro-SUV looks, the vehicle will be a worthy alternative to regular hatchbacks, having more or less the same demographic as the KUV100. The presence of large wheels, flared wheel-arches, and roof rails make it look very desirable. And unsurprisingly it looks better in the metal than the KUV.

Maruti Baleno RS

Maruti Baleno RS 1

USP: Lightweight, powerful

Expected launch: September/October 2016

Maruti has decided to make its Baleno premium hatchback more enthusiast-oriented with the inclusion of a turbocharged petrol engine. The vehicle is light weight, so the added performance will be evident. While final figures are yet to be released, expect the Boosterjet engine to produce in the region of 110 PS and 170 Nm. Expect crazy 0-100 kmph times.

Fiat Urban Cross

Fiat Avventura Urban Cross 2

USP: Styling, performance

Expected launch: September/October 2016

Based on the Fiat Avventura but without the boot-mounted spare wheel, the Urban Cross was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo. More than the styling alone, it’s the slightly more luxurious interior and the 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine (140-145 PS and 212 Nm) under the bonnet that will be the main selling points of the car. The removal of the spare wheel from the rear makes it look better, too.

Volkswagen Ameo

Ameo Sedan

USP: Ride and handling, fit and finish

Expected launch: July 2016

VW’s first product in the sub-four-meter sedan segment, the Ameo will be the first to offer a dual clutch automatic transmission on a diesel engine among compact sedans. Based on the Polo, the Ameo will offer top-class fit and finish, and as early reports suggest, good to drive, too.
