New Maruti Ertiga: Details of new diesel engine revealed

The all-new Maruti Ertiga was just launched days ago, and the new MPV is a much improved vehicle. While the petrol engine of the new Ertiga is an all-new unit, replete with a mild hybrid layout, the diesel engine is the same old 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet unit. By the end of 2019, all this will change.

The all-new Maruti Ertiga is expected to get the 1.5 liter diesel engine that Suzuki has developed in-house. The new diesel engine will not only meet Bharat Stage 6 emission norms but is also expected to be more powerful than the Fiat Multijet unit, which makes 89 Bhp-200 Nm.

The new engine is also expected to be paired to a brand new, 6 speed manual gearbox. This gearbox will again be an improvement over the current 5 speed unit. Expect fuel efficiency to go up marginally thanks to the taller 6th gear which will allow the engine to operate at a lower rpm at cruising speeds.

Expect the diesel powered variants of the Ertiga to get pricier once the new engine is introduced. This is because the new Bharat Stage 6 emission norms will require additional emission control equipment. This will increase costs significantly.

The new Ertiga is based on the HEARTECT platform, and is actually lighter than the previous generation model despite it being larger than before. It’s longer and wider while the wheelbase is unchanged. Interior room has gone up as a consequence, and luggage capacity has also increased.

The all-new Ertiga will soon get a CNG-Petrol dual fuel variant. This variant will be made available in specific markets of India where CNG dispensing outlets are available. The new variant will be aimed primarily at the cab market. However personal MPV buyers interested in low running costs are also likely to opt for the vehicle. There’s no LPG Petrol variant on the anvil anytime soon though.

As for features, the new Maruti Ertiga gets brand new beige interiors with a new dashboard design. The MPV gains faux wood inserts on the dashboard, giving it a premium look and feel. Roof mounted AC vents continue to be available on the MPV. A major addition is automatic climate control. A touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is another new feature addition. Prices of the new Maruti Ertiga have gone up thanks to the feature additions, and the new MPV starts from Rs. 7.44 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi.

The new Ertiga is not the only Maruti car that will receive the newly developed, in-house 1.5 liter turbocharged diesel engine. There are a whole lot of cars waiting for this very motor. The Ciaz Facelift, S-Cross, Swift, Baleno and the Vitara Brezza are all waiting for this motor.
