New Maruti Suzuki Swift: Exports to South Africa commence from Gujarat factory

The new Maruti Suzuki Swift, introduced in India during February 2018, is already a mega hit, what with over 1 lakh bookings received in less than 2 months of launch. Maruti Suzuki has now started exporting the right-hand drive Swift to South Africa, a key export market for the car.

The Swift being exported is built from the newly commissioned Gujarat factory. Earlier this year, Maruti moved production of the Baleno premium hatchback from Gujarat to Manesar to accommodate the new Swift, which is expected to generate massive demand, and along with it long waiting times. Now that Maruti is exporting the Swift to South Africa, waiting times for Indian buyers may go up further.

The 3rd generation Swift that has been exported to South Africa is yet to be launched there. The car sold in India is offered with two engine options – a 1.2 liter K-Series petrol with 82 Bhp of peak power and 113 Nm of peak torque, and a 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet turbodiesel with 74 Bhp and 190 Nm.

Both engines get a 5 speed manual gearbox as standard. 5 speed AMT options are available with both engines as an option. The latest Swift is dimensionally smaller on the outside than the older model but is much larger on the inside thanks to the 20 mm increase in wheelbase. Boot space has also increased significantly over the older model.

The new Swift uses the HEARTECT platform, a light weight platform that uses high tensile steel to increase strength while reducing weight at the same time. This has allowed for significant weight saving, making the petrol version of the car a lot more peppier and fuel efficient. As for the diesel models, Maruti has tuned it for better fuel efficiency rather than outright performance.

The new Swift gets safety features such as twin airbags and ABS as standard. The top-end variants of the car are quite loaded. Features such as LED headlamps, push button start, keyless entry, SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Carplay are standard on the top-end variants. Prices of the Swift start from Rs. 4.99 lakhs.
