Maruti Suzuki launched the all-new WagonR today at The Intercontinental Lalit Mumbai. The new model has been priced between Rs 3.28 lakh and Rs 3.81 lakh. Present at the occasion was Mr Shinzo Nakanishi, Managing Director, Maruti Suzuki India.
The best seller in its segment, the WagonR has now grown taller and stands wider compared to its out-going model. Maruti has increased the length of the all-new WagonR by 75 mm to 3,595 mm the wheelbase is increased by 40mm to 2,400 mm.
New WagonR engine and specs
Powered by a BS-4 E10 complaint 998cc K-Series petrol engine that conforms to Bharat Stage IV emission norms, the new WagonR produces 68bhp at 6200rpm and churns out 90Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. This 3-cylinder motor is capable of a fuel efficiency of 18.9 kmpl as per Maruti officials. Good news for all mileage fanatics out there! The transmission now has a cable-type gearshift which would make shifts much smoother and slicker.
New WagonR: Chassis and interiors

Maruti Suzuki has gone in for an all-new platform for the new WagonR using a much larger dimensions which as a result has increased the in-cabin space. The WagonR also claims to have best-in-class rear seat comfort. Maruti engineers have also revamped the suspension setup, which now is a 3-point setup which increases driveability and comfort.
Exterior, interior and design

This is a much snazzier design than the outgoing WagonR for sure – which itself had undergone a design refresh some five years back. Everything on the K-series WagonR looks bigger now: headlights, bumpers, fenders tailgate. Use of chrome is abundant on the outside, with splashes of it thrown on the front grill and the rear tail gate making the car look expensive.
On the exterior, this new baby now sports very chic-looking sweeping headlamps with integrated blue tint (the dolphin Honda City had it) – hence the nichname Blue Eyed Boy. On the inside the car feels real roomy with a twin tone dash and an integrated music system. Under the front passenger seat is a very cleverly designed bin/storage space with a removable ray. This unique addition is very handy and practical, and unseen on any car that’s available here in India.

Safety
The new WagonR has ABS and airbags as options – even though not on the low end models. Here at DWS AutoIndia, airbags are a religion and we think they should be mandated on even the low end models – but the fact that car manufacturers are nowadays offering it as an option is a good beginning indeed. The car, with its rigid cage structure technology and the spruced up frontal impact absorbing area should offer overall better safety levels.
Colours
Unveiled in three variants, Lx, Lxi and Vxi, the new WagonR is being offered in seven shades such as Metallic breeze blue, Superior white, Midnight black, Baker’s chocolate, Breeze blue, Fire brick red, Silky silver and Glistening grey.
New WagonR: Prices and variants
Available in Lx, Lxi and Vxi with airbags and ABS as optional on the variants. Prices start at Rs 3.30 Lakhs for the Lx, Rs 3.72Lakhs ex-showroom Mumbai for the Lxi and Rs 3.97Lakhs for the Vxi as an special introductory price.
The WagonR Vxi variant comes with front and rear fog lamps, rear wiper and washer, rear defogger, dual horn, airbag and ABS as options. The variant, along with the WagonR Lxi sibling, also sports a driver-side seat belt indicator on the dash panel as standard.
Competition for the WagonR: Figo, Polo, Beat, Vista, i10….
The new WagonR launch has further raised the stakes in the hatchback car segment. The new WagonR takes on the Hyundai i10, the Ford Figo Petrol, Indica Vista, Chevy Beat and would also eat into the Volkswagen Polo segment. Very interesting times ahead for the Hatch Car segment with this launch
Watch this space for an full road test of the all new WagonR soon.
With the new WagonR now launched, Maruti Suzuki India is looking at phasing out the existing Wagon that has already sold around 8.8 lakh units.
