Upcoming SUVs this year

India’s love for SUVs does not seem to slow down. To bank on this growing demand for sports utility vehicles, Indian and international automakers are gearing up for the launches of a number of exciting SUVs in the country. If you are one of those individuals, you have come to the right place. Here is the list of all the SUVs that will be coming out this year.

Tata Nexon iCNG

Tata Motors is gearing up for the launch of the new Nexon iCNG. Once launched, it will become India’s first CNG car featuring a turbocharged engine. Showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, this model is expected to include an automatic gearbox and the dual-cylinder technology seen in the Punch, Tiago, and Tigor CNG variants.

While the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine will experience a slight dip in power and torque, the company will be adding to the popularity of this already popular sub-compact SUV. It is expected to make its debut in June. The exact date has not been reported.

Mahindra Thar 5-door

The second and most anticipated SUV of this year is the Mahindra Thar 5-door Armada. Most likely, it will be launched on 15 August this year. This new SUV will become the more practical alternative to the Thar three-door model. It will come with a slightly different exterior and a ton of new features on the inside.

The list of its offerings includes 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, a larger infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster, and an electric sunroof. Engine options will include the familiar 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol.

Mahindra will also be offering it with the same 1.5-litre diesel for an entry-level rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant. Both four-wheel drive (4WD) and two-wheel drive (2WD) configurations will be available.

Tata Curvv EV

Tata Motors is looking forward to the launch of the Curvv EV, its most unique-looking SUV in India. Reportedly, it will be making its debut around September of this year. The Tata Curvv EV, which made its debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, will extend Tata’s electric vehicle (EV) portfolio.

Based on the Nexon platform but with an extended wheelbase, the Tata Curvv EV is expected to deliver a range of 450-500 km. Its SUV-coupe design will make it a standout in the midsize electric SUV segment. Once launched, it will be competing with the likes of the Hyundai Creta EV, Maruti eVX, and Toyota’s electric SUV based on the eVX.

Hyundai Alcazar Facelift

The refreshed Hyundai Alcazar is anticipated around September-October. This new SUV will share some design elements with the new Creta. It will also come with a similar revamped dashboard with connected digital displays, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof.

As for the engine choices, the company will not be offering any new options. It will continue to offer the same 1.5-litre turbo-petrol making 160 hp. It will also be getting the same 1.5-litre diesel engine making 115 hp. It will be offered with both manual and automatic transmission options.

Citroen Basalt

The French automaker Citroen will be joining the SUV-coupe trend with its newest offering, Basalt. The model was unveiled by the company in March, and it is the fourth model in Citroen’s C-Cubed programme.

It will come powered by a 110 bhp, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine with manual or automatic gearbox options. The new Basalt will stand out with its distinctive sloping roofline and redesigned rear quarter.

Citroen eC3 Aircross

Citroen is also taking a leap of faith with the launch of the new eC3 Aircross. This will be the electric version of the C3 Aircross SUV, and it is expected to be launched later in the year.

The new Citroen eC3 Aircross will be based on the CMP platform designed for electric powertrains. Reportedly, the eC3 Aircross will feature a larger battery to accommodate its size, resulting in a delayed launch. Most likely, it will look very similar to its ICE counterpart.

Hyundai Creta EV

Hyundai is also betting big on the electric future of India and is expected to launch its Creta EV by the year-end. Most likely, its sales will commence in early 2025. Reportedly, it will come equipped with 45-60 kWh battery packs and an estimated range of 350-500 km per charge.

As per the sources, the upcoming Creta EV will share several components with the Kona EV. Spy shots suggest subtle design differences from the internal combustion engine (ICE) version.

Mahindra XUV.e8

Mahindra is also looking to take another step towards its goal of electrification. It will be launching the XUV.e8 in the country, which will be based on the INGLO born-electric architecture. It will be a 7-seater SUV and will essentially be an electric version of the XUV700.

Recently, its interior patents have revealed that it will come with a three-screen layout. It will also be getting a new two-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Mahindra logo. As for the powertrain, it is expected to come with an all-wheel-drive system and battery options up to 80 kWh. The XUV.e8 is expected to deliver power outputs ranging from 230 bhp to over 350 bhp.
