Nissan officially launched the Micra diesel 1.5 dCI on December 10, 2010, after opening bookings for the car from the first week of November.
The Micra diesel comes in two variants the XV and XV Premium. The ex-showroom Delhi price of the Nissan Micra XV diesel is Rs. 5,58,500 and the Micra XV Premium is priced at Rs. 6,04,500.
The Nissan Micra diesel is powered by a 1.5 litre, four-cylinder common rail K9K diesel engine that develops 63 bhp of power at 4,000 rpm and 160 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm mated to a five-speed gearbox. Incidentally, it’s the same Renault-Nissan engine that powers the Mahindra Logan diesel as well. Related: Nissan Micra diesel bookings open
Nissan does not offer ABS with either of the diesel variants, but it provides a single driver airbag in both variants. The difference between the two variants is that XV Premium comes with a start-stop button and 15-inch alloy wheels. Other features that the Micra offers is an intelligent key and immobilizer, power-folding mirrors and multi-information display. Nissan has also added a rear spoiler on the XV Premium diesel variant.
Nissan does not plan to export the diesel variant of the Micra at present.
Satoshi Matsutomi, vice president, product planning, Nissan Motor India said “Nissan is offering the diesel engine in the Micra only in India. We will wait for customer feedback before we decide on anything else.”
The Micra will be produced at Nissan’s plant at Oragadam near Chennai. The plant has a capacity of about 2,00,000 cars annually, but Nissan plans to expand that to 4,00,000 cars eventually. The company, however, is not confirming its present manufacturing capacity for the Micra, but says it is adequate to meet customer demand. Related: Nissan Micra petrol road test
Nissan has sold about 6,000 Micras (petrol variant) since July 2010, when the car was launched in India.
The next vehicle that Nissan plans to launch will be a sedan based on Nissan’s V-platform that the company plans to launch by mid 2011.
The Nissan Micra is based on the Nissan V platform with a length of 3,780 mm, width of 1,665 mm, height of 1,525 mm and wheelbase of 2,450 mm. The car offers a very short turning radius of 4.65 metres, making it a very handy city car. The company claims an ARAI-tested mileage of 23.08 kmpl. The car is also the lightest diesel hatchback at present with a kerb weight of 992 Kg for the XV variant, which adds to the fuel economy and acceleration. Nissan claims a top speed of 158 kmph for the diesel Micra. The company is offering a two-year (or 50,000 km) warranty for the car. Related: Nissan’s new sedan might be called Sunny

Diesel hatchbacks are fast finding favor with customers looking for extra fuel efficiency and cost savings. They are especially useful for people who travel more than 50 km a day. The average Rs. 15 per litre price difference between diesel and petrol actually begins to show in savings when one travels long distances, now that diesel cars are also far more fuel efficient.
Maruti Swift and Ford Figo are the preferred diesel hatchbacks with the Swift clocking sales figures 12,958 units (petrol and diesel variants combined) and the Figo selling 7,149 units (petrol and diesel variants combined) in October 2010. The Maruti Swift is powered by the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine sourced from Fiat, which produces a healthy 75 hp at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm at 2000 rpm. Ford Figo is powered by the 1.4 litre Duratorq engine that produces 68 bhp at 4,000 rpm.
