Satoshi Matsutomi, vice president, product planning, Nissan Motor India said “Nissan is offering the diesel engine in the Micra only in India. We will wait for customer feedback before we decide on anything else.”

The Micra will be produced at Nissan’s plant at Oragadam near Chennai. The plant has a capacity of about 2,00,000 cars annually, but Nissan plans to expand that to 4,00,000 cars eventually. The company, however, is not confirming its present manufacturing capacity for the Micra, but says it is adequate to meet customer demand. Related: Nissan Micra petrol road test

Diesel hatchbacks are fast finding favor with customers looking for extra fuel efficiency and cost savings. They are especially useful for people who travel more than 50 km a day. The average Rs. 15 per litre price difference between diesel and petrol actually begins to show in savings when one travels long distances, now that diesel cars are also far more fuel efficient.

Maruti Swift and Ford Figo are the preferred diesel hatchbacks with the Swift clocking sales figures 12,958 units (petrol and diesel variants combined) and the Figo selling 7,149 units (petrol and diesel variants combined) in October 2010. The Maruti Swift is powered by the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine sourced from Fiat, which produces a healthy 75 hp at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm at 2000 rpm. Ford Figo is powered by the 1.4 litre Duratorq engine that produces 68 bhp at 4,000 rpm.
