Nissan Sway Concept previews the Next-Generation Micra Hatchback

The Nissan Sway hatchback concept has been displayed at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The car previews the next-generation Micra, whose global production base will lie in France, Europe. The Sway concept is based on the automaker’s Common Module Family (CMF) platform. It remains to be seen if the Sway’s production version – the Euro-spec Micra – makes an India debut. This, as Nissan India’s top officials have hinted that the V-Platform will continue to underpin the next-generation hatchback sold in India and most parts of the emerging world. However, a clear picture regarding the platform that the India-spec new Micra will use is yet to emerge.

Coming back to the Sway concept, the car gets a new front end, with the trademark front grille that’s a de-facto addition to all new Nissan cars. A floating roof design, boomerang shaped head lamps and tail lamps, prominently flared wheel arches hosting tall wheels, a cab forward stance,a rising window line, and trapezoidal exhaust finishers are the other design highlights of the Sway. While the current generation Micra embodies a slew of curves in its design, the Sway represents an edgier design. So, expect the Euro-spec Micra to be a much more sharper looking car than the version it replaces. Some of these cues are expected to make it to the next-generation Micra sold in India as well.

Also, the dimensions of the Sway – length at 4.01 meters and wheelbase at 2.57 meters – indicate that the next-generation Micra will be much more larger, liberating more space on the inside. This is in tune with the general trend in the B-Segment class, where hatchbacks continue to get larger. Engine and transmission details have not been revealed yet. Turbo petrol and diesel power is highly likely, with Nissan continuing to toe the CVT automatic gearbox line, along with manual transmission options. With production of the Euro-Spec Micra moving to France, the Renault-Nissan factory at Oragadam, near Chennai, is expected to handle demand from India and next-generation Micra exports to the emerging world.

Here are exterior dimensions of the Sway Concept, which can be used as an indicator of the next-generation Nissan Micra’s size,

  • Length – 4,010 mm
  • Width – 1,780 mm
  • Height – 1,385 mm
  • Wheelbase – 2,570 mm
