Old-gen Hyundai Creta & Mahindra Scorpio in a drag race

We have seen several videos on internet where cars and bikes from same or different segment are seen racing against each other. Results of some of these races are predictable whereas some races end up with surprising results. Here we have a video were an older generation Hyundai Creta and current generation Mahindra Scorpio SUV are competing against each other in a drag race. Both SUVs are quite popular in the country and they have been present in the market for quite some time. Which SUV did win the race? To find out, let’s have a quick look at the video.

The video has been uploaded by Arun Panwar on their YouTube channel. The vlogger starts by talking about both the SUV. The are both diesel powered manual SUVs. In comparison to the current generation Creta, the last generation was powered by a smaller 1.4 litre turbocharged diesel engine. The Mahindra on the other hand is powered by a 2.2 litre mHawk turbocharged diesel engine.

The vlogger and his friend select an empty stretch of road for this drag race and the race is conducted in two rounds. The SUVs are lined up for the race. The vlogger is driving Hyundai Creta and his friend is driving the Mahindra Scorpio. The race starts and both SUVs move off the line at the same time. Both SUVs were next to each other and were trying to take the lead. For some time, it looked like it is going to be a tie.

As the Creta shifts to third gear, Mahindra Scorpio starts gaining and takes the lead. Mahindra Scorpio then maintains the lead throughout the race and wins the round. After the first round, they line up for the second round, the vlogger can be heard saying in the video that he thinks the Scorpio will be winning the second round as well. He mentions that, there is a little bit of lag in the Creta which is making it less fun to drive.

They both line up for the second round and both SUVs move off the line at the same time. Just like the first round, both SUVs were next to each other for the first couple of 100 meters and after that Scorpio started pulling ahead and took the lead. Vlogger kept on pushing the Creta but, it was of no use. Mahindra Scorpio won both rounds without any problem.

What actually happened here? Mahindra Scorpio is a heavier SUV when compared with Hyundai Creta. The main reason why Mahindra Scorpio won this round is because of its powerful engine. The Mahindra Scorpio is powered by a 2.2 litre turbocharged diesel engine that generates 140 Bhp and 319 Nm of peak torque. The Hyundai Creta diesel on the other hand is powered by a 1.4 litre turbocharged engine that generates 89 Bhp and 220 Nm of torque. The age of the SUV might also be a reason. The Scorpio even with a heavier body had a better power to weight ratio and that is the reason why it won. This doesn’t mean Creta is a bad SUV. It is one of the best selling SUV in the segments.
