Porsche has always had a wide range of 911s on sale in the country. There is one to suit every need, ranging from the normal Carrera to the GT3 RS. Porsche however stopped offering a manual transmission on their high-end range, be it the GT3 or the GT3RS. To address that, Porsche decided to make an extra special model, called the 911R. The 911R was introduced at the Geneva Motorshow last year and was limited to 991 units, symbolising the model of the 911.
It has been built to pay homage to the original 911R which was introduced in 1967 as a road going homologated version of their race car, hence the R badging. While most of their range consists of track focussed cars, this one is built to cater to the old school driving experience, rather than pure lap times.
The vehicle is powered by a 4.0 liter flat-six engine taken from the GT3 RS and it develops 493 Bhp and 460 Nm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and power is sent to the rear wheels. This 6-speed manual is the main attraction of this vehicle. It has a short throw unit with gear ratios built specifically for this car. It also has the capability of double-declutching, which can be activated by the press of a button.
The car accelerates from 0-100 in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 323 kmph. Weight saving has been done on a large scale. It shares its body with the GT3, which means it has plastic bumpers, a carbon fibre bonnet and front wings, magnesium roof and plastic rear windows.
Visually, the car gets the stripe through the center of the car. What this misses out on is a large rear wing. The R has a rear wing which is dynamic and comes up at speed, rather than a fixed one the GT3 and the GT3 RS get.
This example has been delivered to Bangalore and is expected to be the only one that is making its way to the country. Pricing details haven’t been revealed, however being a collectable Porsche, the owner must have surely paid a fortune for it.
