New Hyundai Sonata
Expected Launch: January 5
Looks: The all new Sonata (known as i45 in other countries) boasts the brand’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language evident from the smooth flowing lines that give a luxurious yet sporty character to the car. The rear-view mirrors have LED turn-indicators which can be electronically operated from the inside. The rear of the Sonata has stylish, wide tail lamps and sculpted boot lid that accentuates a premium feel. Clearly, the Sonata will be one of the best looking cars from Hyundai in its Indian product portfolio.
Performance: For the India-bound Sonata, Hyundai may use a 2.4 litre petrol engine that produces 198 hp of power and 250 Nm of torque. The car will sport a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai may consider launching the 2.2 litre diesel engine that produces 197 bhp of power and 420 Nm of torque. It has to be noted that Hyundai’s 2.2 litre CRDi engine already serves its purpose in the Santa Fe SUV, which the company launched in India December last year.
Mileage: Hyundai claims a fuel efficiency of 12.6 km/litre (in international markets) for the petrol version while the diesel version can be expected to have a fuel efficiency of 16 kmpl.

Hyundai Elantra / Avante
Expected unveiling: January 5
Looks: The upcoming Elantra, may retain the Avante name, and adopts the popular ‘fluidic sculpture’ as adopted by Hyundai cars such as the i10, Verna and the recently launched Eon small car. We feel that, the new Elantra will be a better looking model with its attractive curves.
Performance: The Elantra will likely be powered by a 1.8-litre Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) petrol motor that puts out 146 bhp of power. The Elantra diesel is expected to get a 2.0-litre common-rail diesel engine that makes 138 bhp of power. The engines will be mated to 6-speed manual and 6-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission.
Mileage: The Elantra may have a mileage in the range of 10 – 15 kmpl for the petrol and the diesel versions.
Variants and prices: The Elantra is expected to be priced in the range of Rs. 12 – 15 lakh which is where most of its competitors are also priced such as the Honda Civic (Rs. 12.21 -13.96 lakh), the Chevrolet Cruze (Rs. 12.03 – 14.44 lakh) and the Skoda Laura (Rs. 12.44 – 15.05 lakh).
2012 Honda Civic
Expected unveiling: January 5
Looks: The new Civic has sharp lines, which are reminiscent of the older variants but not lacks the futuristic looks of the present model. The redesigned front grille and headlamp cluster are similar to what we have seen on the Honda City while the rear brake lights hug the reverse parking lights beautifully. Overall, the new Civic design is more elegant but slightly conservative.
Performance: The 2012 Honda Civic will be powered by a 1.8-litre i-Vtec engine that produces 140 hp of peak power, which is about 10 hp more than the present Civic 1.8-litre motor. The engine will be mated to 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic gearbox depending on the variant. Expect the performance of the new Civic to be better than the existing model.
Mileage: the new Civic will likely have a slightly better fuel economy than that of the present model which has ARAI-certified mileage of 14.8 kmpl for the manual version and 13.9 kmpl for the automatic version.
Variants and price details: The 2012 Civic may be offered in three trim levels, a base manual variant, a top-end manual variant and a top-end automatic variant. The price of the upcoming Civic will likely be significantly more than the present model which has a price range of Rs.12.21 – 13.96 lakh.
2012 Chevrolet Cruze
Expected Launch: January 6
Looks: Expect minimal or no changes on the exterior of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze. However, the new model will come with minor interior upgrades including redesigned rear passenger seats for improved headroom.
Performance: The 2012 Cruze will be powered by GM’s Z series, 2.0 litre, DOHC, common-rail diesel motor that produces 163 bhp (presently it is 148 bhp) of maximum power. The new Cruze will have an edge of a wholesome 33 Bhp over one of its key competitor the Civic that belts out 130 bhp of power.

Looks: The face-lifted Toyota Camry borrows design cues from Toyota’s premium brand, Lexus. The front grille has three horizontal chrome slats giving the car a bolder road presence. The sharp angles and sporty rear profile give the new Camry, a youthful appeal.
Performance: The new Camry is expected to be powered by a new 2.5-litre petrol (replacing the 2.4-litre petrol) engine. This motor will put out 167 bhp of power and will perform slightly better than its predecessor.
