by Shantonil Nag

The Toyota Fortuner is leading the segment by a huge margin. The all-new second-generation Toyota Fortuner was launched in the Indian market in November 2016 and it sells around 2,000 units per month on an average, making it a hot-selling product. The direct competitor of the Fortuner – Ford Endeavour -barely crosses 500 units per month! What are the reasons that make the Toyota Fortuner a hot-selling product in the Indian market? Let’s find out.

Toyota’s image

Toyota has a well-established image in the Indian market. Ever since the first generation of the SUV was launched in 2009, the Fortuner has remained the best-selling product in the segment. It has created a strong base of itself over the years.

The brand image of the Fortuner was built over the years and when it comes to buying a full-size SUV, most people put their money on the vehicle. Even the government convoys, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, uses Toyota Fortuners for its brand image.

Resale value

Resale value in India is one of the biggest criteria for the popularity of the cars. The Fortuner enjoys a high resale value in the market. Even though the price of the SUV starts at Rs. 26 lakhs and goes up to Rs. 31 lakhs, the resale value does not drop much even after a couple of years.

According to a report published on Carwale, 85% of the original value of the Toyota Fortuner is retained even after three years, which makes it an excellent choice for the people who love to upgrade their vehicle after using it for a few years.

Trustworthy sales network

Toyota has a great service network in India, which is well spread across the country. The service centre network touches almost all the major cities and towns in India. There are around 250+ service networks of Toyota in India, which can be found in even Tier II and Tier III cities. Also, Toyota offers a three years comprehensive warranty with the Fortuner that can also be extended. Toyota vehicles are known for their bulletproof engines and the vehicles can last for a few lakh kilometres without any trouble. Toyota also provides roadside assistance in India, which further assures the buyers.

Affordable service

Toyota’s popularity in India is also propelled by the affordable service cost of the vehicle. In fact, it is the reason behind the brand’s global success. Just like all the Toyota vehicles, the Fortuner too is quite affordable to maintain. Also, the Toyota vehicles do not break down unexpectedly. Most of the Toyota cars only need general servicing to be in working condition, that further brings down the cost of ownership over time.

Wide range of variants

The Toyota Fortuner comes with a wide range of engine choices and variants. Toyota currently offers six variants of the Fortuner, including the manuals and the automatic one. The Fortuner is available with both petrol and diesel engines, unlike the rivals. The petrol version is available in only the 4X2 layout, but gets both manual and automatic transmission options.

The diesel engine of the Fortuner gets a wider variety. It gets both 4X2 and 4X4 options and also gets manual and automatic, with both the drive layouts. It helps Toyota to capture the customers who have different needs. While the mall-dwellers go for the 4X2 petrol variants with automatics, people who are looking for convenience go for the highly capable 4X4 options.

The highly reliable diesel engine

The Toyota Fortuner’s diesel variants are powered by the highly-acclaimed GD-series diesel engine. The line-up was first launched in 2015 and is one of the most advanced diesel engines in the world. It gets Associated ESTEC (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion) technology that increases the fuel efficiency considerably, while providing seamless acceleration to the vehicle.

The GD series engines claim to get a high thermal efficiency of 44 percent. The 2.8-litre engine from the series is one of the most thermally efficient engines ever made, according to Toyota. It produces a maximum of 174.5 Bhp and 420 Nm of peak torque in the Fortuner.
