Renault is planning to launch the Duster 5-seater SUV in early July 2012, as CarToq confirmed last week. The Duster is expected to be priced between Rs. 7 lakh and Rs. 11 lakh and offered in five variants.
Looks, space and comfort
The production version of the Duster will look a bit different from the model showcased at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo. For instance, the body colored bumper in the showcased model now has a matte-black lower portion in the production model. On the outside, rear view mirrors the chrome bits have been replaced by body colors. However, the rest of the styling such as headlamp cluster, radiator grille and overall shape is the same.
The interiors of the Duster have a dual-tone beige and grey combination. The dashboard has AC vents that look like the Logan’s vents. The power window switches have been moved to the door pads, but the mirror adjustment stays in the center console. It has ample legroom and separate AC vent for the rear with a blower speed control.
The Duster is expected to come in three engine options: 102 Bhp 1.6-litre petrol, 108 Bhp 1.5-litre diesel and 85 Bhp 1.5-litre diesel. The petrol motor will be mated to a five-speed manual transmission, while the diesel engines get a six-speed manual transmission.
The Duster petrol is expected to have fuel economy of about 13 Kmpl while the Duster diesel versions may return a mileage of between 18 Kmpl and 20 kmpl. The K9K diesel engine, particularly the 85 Bhp version (as in the Nissan Sunny diesel) is known for its fuel efficiency.
Comfort features in the Duster will include keyless entry and rear-AC vent with blower control. It has boot space of 475 litres and driving aids such as a rear defogger, rear wiper & washer, electric mirrors, rear parking sensors and front fog lamps. With regard to safety features, the Duster will get dual front airbags, ABS with brake assist and EBD (Electronic Brake force distribution).
Gadgets may include music system with four speakers, USB, aux-in and Bluetooth connectivity. Looks wise, the top-of-the line variant may get chrome grille, 16-inch alloy wheels and leather upholstery.
Variants and Competition
Renault will offer the Duster in five variant – two petrol (RxE and RxL) and three diesel (RxE, RxL and RxZ), with the top-most model getting the 108 bhp diesel engine. For the moment, Renault does not plan to introduce a 4×4 version, and all the Dusters will be front-wheel drive variants only.
The Duster will be a direct competitor to Ford’s upcoming SUV, the EcoSport. It will also compete with MPVs like the Mahindra sub-4 meter mini Xylo and even the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Also read: EcoSport vs Duster vs Ertiga
