Renault is working on an all-new compact SUV for the Indian market, i.e the Kaptur. The vehicle was spotted by one of our readers, Mr. Harshanth Mani in Ooty under going some testing.
Information given by him:
According to what was seen by him, there were two vehicles on test, both diesel versions. While one was the top of the line variant, the other was a lower grade model. While the lower end variant got projector lamps, the top of the line featured LED headlamps. The lower variant on the test car had steel rims where as the top end had 16″ alloys. Also on offer on the top end were leather seats and a touch screen infotainment system, that is offered on the Duster currently.
What we know:
The Kaptur is a compact SUV that sits above the Duster in the international market. It is based on the same BO platform that underpins the Duster as well. According to the international site, the Kaptur is slightly larger than the Duster (15 mm) which means that overall space on the inside will be similar to what is on offer in the Duster.
As for the engines, the Russian market gets the option of either a 1.6 liter or a 2.0 liter petrol engines. Given that India is not a petrol market, a diesel will surely be on offer. Now it will be interesting to see if the company continues to use the 1.5 liter K9K unit or decides to bring in a larger unit given the premium positioning of the Kaptur.
The Kaptur has been spotted testing a few times now. The company will look to bring in the vehicle by the end of 2017.
Since the Kaptur is a more premium offering compared to the Duster, it will sit above it in terms of price point. This means that it will rival the Creta (top of the line variants) as well as sit around the Tucson in term of pricing.
While the Duster was fairly successful for Renault in India and the Koleos wasn’t exactly a success, it will be interesting to see how this premium SUV does in our market.
