Renault Kiger compact SUV SPIED testing in India ahead of official launch

Renault will launch a brand-new, sub-4 meter compact SUV called the Kiger in India early next year. Just a couple of days ago, the French automaker showcased a concept version of the Kiger compact SUV and noted that the production model will have at least 80 % similarity with the concept version. It seems that Renault is quite right about this now that spyshots of the near-production version of the Kiger have surfaced. A test mule of the Renault Kiger was recently spotted in the hill station of Munnar, Kerala, and the lines and curves that the test mule featured looks very similar to the concept version that was recently showcased. Here, check it out.

As the spyshots indicate, the Kiger looks like a scaled down version of the Renault Captur, even as it maintains its distinct identity thanks to its front end styling. There are chunky wheel arches – a typical SUV/cross0ver touch – and the headlamps are mounted on the front bumper – a design touch that’s becoming increasingly common in the SUV world. The alloy wheel design looks similar to the ones shown in the concept but expect it to be a lot less funkier in the production version. Overall, the Renault Kiger looks quite rounded in terms of design.

The compact SUV will share its platform with a range of entry-level Renault, Nissan and Datsun cars. The Kiger sits on the CMF-A platform, which it shares with the Datsun RediGo, the Renault Kwid and Triber, and the upcoming Nissan Magnite. The Kiger will also share its mechanicals with the upcoming Nissan Magnite, which will be built alongside at the Renault-Nissan joint manufacturing facility in Oragadam, off Chennai.

A 1 liter-3 cylinder engine will power the Kiger, and this engine will be available in turbocharged and naturally aspirated forms. In turbocharged trim, expect the engine to put out 95 Bhp-150 Nm while the naturally aspirated motor will make about 72 Bhp-96 Nm. 5 speed manual gearboxes will be standard on both engines with the turbocharged engine also offering a CVT automatic gearbox option.  The Kiger will be a five seat SUV, and we expect a flurry of clever touches in the cabin. As for safety, twin airbags, ABS, EBD, reverse parking sensors, a reverse parking camera, seat belt reminder and speed alerts are expected to be the key features on the top-end trims of the compact SUV. A touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, navigation and stereo will dominate the center console. Steering mounted audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity, automatic climate control, height adjustable steering and a 60:40 split for the rear seat are key features that the Kiger is likely to pack in.

Renault has indicated that the production version of the Kiger will be revealed in early 2021, followed by the actual launch. In terms of pricing, the Renault Kiger is likely to start from under Rs. 6 lakh given the fact that Nissan is readying up to launch the Magnite with prices as low as Rs. 5.5 lakh. At a sub-6 lakh price point, the Renault Kiger will be one of the most affordable compact SUVs sold in India. Will this be enough for Renault to grab marketshare from the likes of the Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300? Time will tell!
