Renault Lodgy MPV to be launched in India in January 2014

Renault is said to be evaluating plans to bring in the Renault Lodgy, an MPV based on the Renault Duster platform, for the Indian market, to compete with the Maruti Ertiga. The Lodgy is a full-fledged seven-seater and is more spacious than the Ertiga.

Renault is said to be planning to launch the Lodgy in India around the time of the Auto Expo in January 2014. The vehicle is already being sold in Europe under the Dacia brand (even the Duster was originally a Dacia brand, based on the Logan). As the name suggests, the Lodgy, is supposedly large enough to pass off as a small lodge! Also read: Renault confirms Lodgy MPV for India

Spacious design

When looked at in profile it looks like a stretched Ertiga, but with much larger windows, and it has a distinctly car-like front (there is a genetic connection to the Verito nee Logan). The upswept headlamps and large grille are likely to be slightly redesigned for India – but its face is nowhere as aggressive as the Duster. At the rear, the most striking parts of the design are the tail-lamps on the pillars which have an oddly-hexagonal pattern to them. The large rear hatch will help in easy loading of luggage in this flexible MPV.

Flexible and spacious interiors

The interiors of the Lodgy will go down well with Indian buyers as they are practical and spacious. The third row in the Lodgy apparently has more space than an Ertiga. They fold flat and there is a roller parcel tray in case you don’t want your luggage to be seen. With all rows up, there is still some boot space for luggage. The layout of the dashboard is simple and practical, and there are quite a few storage spaces such as deep door pockets and cubby holes on the dash too.

In terms of features, it isn’t likely to throw up any surprises, and will be adequately equipped with power steering, steering-column mounted Bluetooth audio controls, integrated music system and manual HVAC.

Trusted power plant

The best part about the Lodgy is that it is powered by Renault’s tried and trusted 1.5 litre diesel engine. The Lodgy is likely to come with the 110 PS (108bhp) variant of the engine that is present in the top-end Renault Duster. It will come with a six-speed gearbox that will make it quite a good long-distance cruiser. Also read: Maruti Ertiga vs Mahindra Quanto

What we think

If Renault brings in the Lodgy and prices it at about Rs 8 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh, in the Maruti Ertiga and Nissan Evalia territory, it will prove to be quite a potent MPV. It may also give the Mahindra Xylo and Toyota Innova a run for their money, although it may also upset the Renault Duster apple cart a bit. Share your thoughts on the Renault Lodgy.
