Rooftop camping on the new Mahindra Thar: Here’s how it’s done [Video]

Mahindra Thar has been one those SUV that has gained popularity in a very short span of time. There is a long waiting period on this SUV and Mahindra has already increased the production to meet the demand. One of the main reason why the new-gen Thar became an instant hit in comparison to the older one is because of the build quality. It has improved a lot and is also offering more features. In short, the new generation is good both on and off-road. We have already started seeing several modifications on Mahindra Thar and here we have another with a unique type of modification. This is probably India’s first 2020 Mahindra Thar to get a roof top tent.

The video has been installed by DCV on his YouTube channel. The vlog shows the roof top tent and the vlogger shares his experience on how hard or simple was it set up and fold back the tent. The vlogger is on a solo road trip and says that he did not face any difficulties while sleeping on the roof top tent. He admits that it took him some time to get adjusted but, apart from that the overall experience was pretty good. According to the vlogger it was zero degree at night but, he did not feel too cold.

It took him only 2-5 minutes to set up the tent but, when it came to folding it back, it took him some time. The vlogger was doing it for the first time and that was one of the reason. He is easily folded the tent back to the roof in just few minutes but, the cover which protects the tent is what took all the time. He said that over the next couple of days, he’ll come up with an easier way to put the cover back on the top.

The tent sits perfectly on the roof and does not look odd at all. The vlogger has also installed a foldable stove counter on the tail gate. The Mahindra Thar seen in the video actually started its life as a soft top convertible. The owner made some modifications over a period of time. The FRP roof was installed from Bimbra 4×4 who are known for their work among SUV owners. The roof they had installed on this Thar came with mounting points for the roof top tent. The base of the tent was attached to the roof easily so that they do not have to make anymore modifications to the roof itself. The cost of FRP hard top on this Thar with Line-X coating is Rs 74,990 and the cost of installing the roof top tent is Rs 89,990.

Other than this, no other modification can be seen on the Thar. The Mahindra Thar is available with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol version is powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged unit that generates 150 Bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque. The diesel version is powered by a 2.2 litre turbocharged unit that generates 130 Bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque. Both petrol and diesel are available with manual and automatic gearbox options.
