The Royal Enfield Classic 500 Pegasus couldn’t keep its date with Indian buyers thanks to an overwhelming demand that crashed the server hosting the Royal Enfield website. While the limited edition motorcycle will soon go on a flash online sale, here are live pictures of the Pegasus in both Olive Drab Green and Service Brown colours.
India will get only the Service Brown colour on the motorcycle, of which only 250 units will be sold here. 750 units of the Pegasus 500 will be sold all around the world. In total, only 1,000 units of the Flying Flea-inspired motorcycle will be built and each motorcycle will be numbered individually, making it quite unique and special.
Stylistically, the Royal Enfield Classic 500-based Pegasus will get a new paint scheme, brown handlebar grips, a leather strap with brass buckles on the pannier box that holds the air filter, blacked-out headlamp ring, wheel rims, crank case and exhaust.
The whole of the Pegasus’ styling revolves around a military design, which the Flying Flea came with. If you’re wondering about what the Flying Flea is, the motorcycle was a lightweight, 50cc machine meant to be air dropped to British troops during the World War. While the Flying Flea weighed about 60 kilos, the Pegasus is a solid 192 kilograms heavy.
Mechanically, the Royal Enfield Pegasus is bog similar to the Classic 500. The engine of this motorcycle is the familiar, 499cc unit construction lump that makes 27.2 Bhp and 41.3 Nm. This long stroke, air cooled engine is known for immense low-end torque, and gets a dash of modernity in the form of hydraulic tappets, an electric starter and fuel injection. The engine is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox.
Key cycle parts on the Pegasus include telescopic front forks, twin gas charged rear shock absorbers and hydraulic disc brakes on both wheels. The tyres are still tube-type though. In most international markets, the Pegasus gets twin channel ABS as standard. No such luck for the Indian variants yet. The motorcycle is priced at Rs. 2.49 lakhs, on-road, Mumbai.
