Bollywood heartthrob Shahrukh Khan has recently confirmed that the upcoming Hyundai small car (AH2) will carry the iconic Santro name. He confirmed the speculation during an interview with NDTV Car & Bike. Watch the video from 9:55.
Shah Rukh revealed this while he was talking about his bond with Santro and Hyundai. Upon being asked by the host if he would be available next time for an interview in his Santro (older generation), Shah Rukh replied that he has a collection of Santros at his house. He went on to add that the collection includes a first generation model, the middle one (Xing) and ‘may even have the new Santro now’. The final name could have Santro with a suffix though, like say, Santro Xing or Santro ZipDrive.
The upcoming Santro, codenamed AH2, has been spotted testing multiple times. It will be powered by an updated version of the old 1.1-litre, four-cylinder engine that powered the i10 and even the original Santro. The engine, however, will be BSVI-compliant in the new car and is likely to offer higher mileage and power. The new Santro will become the first Hyundai car in India to offer an optional AMT. The 1.1-litre motor is expected to churn out 70 PS of power and 110 Nm of torque.
The new Santro will rival the likes of Renault Kwid, Tata Tiago and Maruti Celerio to name a few. Though there has been no word on the pricing of the car, expect it to stay in the Rs. 3.5 Lakh to Rs. 5.5 Lakh margin.
Shah Rukh has been the face of Hyundai for nearly two decades now. It is the longest stint by any automobile brand ambassador. There have been many other Bollywood-Auto brand partnerships in India, like Aamir Khan for Toyota, Ranbir Kapoor for Nissan, John Abraham for Yamaha and Akshay Kumar for Honda, but none has lasted for so long as in the SRK-Hyundai case.
Considering the long-term relation shared by Shah Rukh and Hyundai, his confirmation has made it almost certain that the Santro name will make a comeback. Also, there is a possibility that the word Santro might be followed by a suffix too. The automaker is expected to launch the new Santro during the upcoming festive season.
