Mahindra has now started offering the Thar with a petrol engine as well as a diesel engine. The previous generation Thar was only offered with a diesel engine. People who travel a lot on highways can still opt for the diesel engine because it delivers better fuel efficiency. People who live in Delhi NCR are preferring the petrol engine because diesel vehicles have a 10-year limit whereas petrol vehicles have a 15-year limit. You can now also get an automatic gearbox with both engines. This has attracted many new customers because now they can enjoy the convenience of one foot driving.
Engine and gearbox
The petrol engine is a 2.0-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol engine. It produces 150 PS of max power and 300/320 Nm of peak torque. The diesel engine is a 2.2-litre mHawk unit that produces 130 PS of max power and 300 Nm of peak torque. Both the engines are offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
Mahindra offers a 4×4 drivetrain, mechanical locking differential, welded tow hooks and tow hitch protection as standard with the Thar. The LX variant also gets a brake locking differential. There is also a roll cage installed and the AX variant also gets provision for Snow Chains.
5-door Thar
Mahindra is also working on a 5-door version of the Thar. The launch of the larger SUV is expected to happen in 2023. The design of the SUV is expected to stay the same. The only change will be the wheelbase and length will be longer to accommodate the rear doors and seats. The rest of the design language is expected to stay the same because people like a rugged-looking SUV.
According to some media reports, Mahindra is working on improving the ride quality even further on the 5-door Thar. The homegrown manufacturer already improved the ride quality of the new-gen Thar by giving a better suspension setup and a reworked ladder frame chassis. However, because the 5-door Thar will mostly be used in cities by families, it would require a more sophisticated suspension setup.
Another improvement that we will see on the 5-door Thar is a lighter steering wheel which will be a benefit while using the SUV in the city. The manufacturer will also promote the 5-door Thar more and will make the 3-door Thar a made-to-order special.
