Snapshot – Six new cars will be launched over the next three weeks of this month, making July 2014 one of the most prolific months when it comes to car launches, even as the month has already witnessed half a dozen launches in the form of the Nissan Sunny Facelift, the Chevrolet Beat and Sail U-VA Man-U editions, the Hyundai Grand i10 LPG, the 2014 Mercedes Benz CLS and the Toyota Etios Xclusive edition.
Volkswagen Polo Facelift
The facelifted Volkswagen Polo hatchback will be launched on the 15th of July and the car will get a brand new, 1.5 liter-4 cylinder TDI turbo diesel engine as the biggest change. The facelifted car’s diesel variants are expected to be better performers than the current variants on the back of the extra power and torque that the new diesel engine brings to the table. While the facelifted Polo will retain its petrol engines unchanged, the car’s cosmetics will see a mild makeover, both on the outside and the inside.
Honda will launch the Mobilio on the 23rd of June and bookings for the MPV have just begun. The MPV will be sold with petrol and turbo diesel engine options. A price tag that pits the Mobilio close to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is anticipated. The first seven seater from Honda for India, the Mobilio will also be aimed at the semi-urban markets of the country given the MPV’s emphasis on utility. The Mobilio range will also play host to a sporty looking RS variant, which will be available with the 1.5 liter i-DTEC turbo diesel engine.
Mercedes Benz CLA 45 AMG
Mercedes Benz’s most affordable AMG badged car, the CLA 45 AMG, will be launched on the 22nd of July. Expected to be priced near the 70 lakh rupee mark, the CLA 45 AMG arrives straight from Germany. The car features the world’s most powerful 4 cylinder engine with a 2 liter capacity and 360 Bhp-450 Nm output. All wheel drive layout is standard on the car, which uses a 7 speed dual clutch automatic gearbox for torque transmission duties. The CLA 45 AMG will be followed by its less sporty or plain vanilla CLA sedan next year.
BMW 7 Series Hybrid
BMW will give the 7 Series a hybrid engine option and will launch the car in India on the 23rd of July. The BMW 7 Series Hybrid will be the first hybrid car in the German luxury car maker’s line up in India. The car is a petrol hybrid, with a 3 liter, inline six cylinder, twin turbo petrol engine working with an electric motor. The petrol engine outputs 320 Bhp and 450 Nm while the electric motor delivers 55 Bhp and 200 Nm. Working in tandem, the petrol and electric motors will propel the 7-Series Hybrid from nought to 100 Kph in just 5.7 seconds while the top speed is an electronically limited 250 Kph. The icing on the cake though, is the 14.7 Kmpl claimed mileage figure of the car. A CBU import, expect to fork out over a crore rupees for the first BMW Hybrid car in India.
Dubbed to be a turnaround product for the Indian car and utility vehicle maker Tata Motors, the Zest compact sedan is weeks away from an Indian launch. The car, which was first showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo, gets a raft of new technology bits such as turbo petrol engine, an Automated Manual Transmission and a touch screen infotainment interface from Harman. The interiors of the Zest are said to be a few notches above other Tata cars in terms of quality. The car will be sold with a turbo diesel engine and the AMT gearbox, a combination hitherto unavailable in the Indian car market. The Zest will compete with the likes of the Maruti Dzire, Hyundai Xcent and the Honda Amaze.
The Cayenne SUV is one of the most successful products in Porsche current line up in India, which will soon be bolstered by a lower priced luxury SUV in the form of the Macan. The Macan will be launched later this month through the CBU import route. The SUV, based on the Audi Q5’s underpinnings, will use a 3 liter V6 turbo diesel engine that is good for 258 Bhp and 580 Nm on its base variant while a higher-spec variant will get a 3.6 liter V6 turbo petrol engine that generates 400 Bhp and 500 Nm. A 7 speed twin clutch automatic gearbox will be standard with both engines and the SUV will get an all wheel drive layout as standard. The Macan is expected to be priced around the 65-70 lakh rupees mark.
