Six upcoming SUVs to take on Jeep Compass; Maruti Suzuki Vitara to Honda HR-V

After the grand success of Jeep Compass in the Indian market, more manufacturers are now planning to launch their products in the same segment. The D-segment is already populated by the Mahindra XUV 500, Tata Hexa, Jeep Compass and the Hyundai Tucson. In the near future, six more vehicles will be launched to take advantage of the increasing popularity of the segment. Here are six new SUVs that will soon launch in India to take on the Jeep Compass.

Honda HR-V

Expected launch date: Mid 2019

Honda has been considering the HR-V for Indian market for a long time now. The SUV will fill the gap between the WR-V and the CR-V in the Indian market. The HR-V will become the fourth vehicle in the R-V series when launched. After the launch of the WR-V, which has gained some popularity in the market, Honda is looking forward to launching the HR-V. It sits above the WR-V and BR-V in the lineup and will compete against the Jeep Compass.

HR-V also sells in the Brazilian market just like the WR-V, and it is also built on the Jazz platform. It gets five seats and many premium features like electric sunroof, touchscreen infotainment and the touch panel climate control system. The SUV will be powered by the 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine that produces 115 Bhp. The diesel unit will the same 1.5-litre i-DTEC or 1.6-litre diesel unit.

Maruti Vitara

Expected launch date: 2019

Maruti has been planning to bring in a new SUV and position it above the highly successful Maruti Vitara Brezza in India. The Vitara has already been spotted testing in India and is on sale in the international markets. The Vitara will be the new flagship for the brand in India and will be positioned above the S-Cross in the market.

The Vitara is expected to be powered by a 1.4-litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engine that churns out a maximum power of 140 Bhp and peak torque of 230 Nm. The diesel engine is likely to be a 1.6-litre Multijet diesel engine or 2.0-litre Multijet engine. It has not been confirmed yet. It will get both manual and automatic transmission options. It is not clear if the car will get the 4WD option in India.

MG Motors ZS

Expected launch date: Mid 2019

MG Motors will soon foray into the Indian market next year with their ZS SUV. MG Motors, which is owned by the Chinese automotive giant, SAIC has already begun work on the production line in Halol, Gujarat after overtaking the plant from General Motors. The SUV is likely to be powered by the same 2.0-litre diesel engine from Fiat that also powers the Compass.

The production will begin next year in India. MG ZS has already been spotted in India and it will be a part of the roadshow that will be held in India for the brand promotions. The 5-seater car is expected to be feature-rich and carry a very competitive price tag.

Kia SP

Expected launch date: Mid 2019

Kia is another international manufacturer that will make its Indian debut soon. Their first car will be an SUV that will be based on the Kia SP Concept that they showcased in India at the 2018 Auto Expo. The Kia will take a premium approach in the Indian market and will target only the prime customers. The engine details or the features of the upcoming car is not known but if the premium audience is a target then we can expect a long list of features in the vehicle. Kia has opened a contest where the viewers will help the brand in finding a new name for the Kia SP Concept.

Peugeot 3008

Expected launch date: Mid 2020

Peugeot will make a comeback to the Indian market soon, and their product portfolio will also have two SUVs. One of them will be the 3008, which will be a rival of Mahindra XUV 500 in India. The 3008 is available in the European market and will be launched in India by 2020.

Currently, the car is powered 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.6-litre diesel engine that comes in various power tuning. There is also an option of automatic transmissions with the 3008. Peugeot will invest Rs. 700 crores to set-up a new factory near Chennai in collaboration with Hindustan Motors, and the 3008 will be made or assembled in the same plant.

Skoda Karoq

Expected launch date: Mid 2018

After the launch of the Kodiaq in India, Skoda is now looking to enter the sub 20 lakh SUV segment. Skoda plans to launch the Karoq in India, and the Czech manufacturer has already imported two units of the Karoq to India. The Karoq is based on the MQB platform will get a lot of premium features like a 9.2-inch infotainment system with gesture control.

The Karoq will also get digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, LED ambient lighting, WiFi hotspot enabled infotainment and more. The Karoq is expected to be powered by a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine. The petrol engine is expected to be a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit, but that has not been confirmed yet. The car will be launched in India by mid-2018.
