Skoda Lauretta sedan to resemble Mission L concept

Only three days back, we had reported that the new sedan from Skoda will be named Lauretta. Skoda has now said that this upcoming C-segment sedan will resemble the Mission L Concept which is to be unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show next week.

According to Skoda, visually, the Mission L Concept car is close to the final production Lauretta sedan. In India, the Lauretta will be positioned between the Fabia and Octavia (Laura in India) in the company’s current product lineup.

The Czech car maker had stated that the production car will primarily compete in the Russian, Chinese, European and Indian markets. But each market will receive a specialized version to best cater to the needs of the region. Read more about the Skoda Lauretta here

For instance, in India, the car will be sold as a four door sedan (with underpinnings of VW Vento) while in Russia and European markets, the car is expected to be sold as five door notchback (hatch door includes the rear windshield).

How does the Mission L Concept look?

The Mission L Concept is a sharp looking sedan with hints of Volkswagen and Vision D concept design elements. The four vertical lines running on the hood add a muscular tone to the car, while the large trapezoidal fog lamps (similar to the one in Vision D concept) are large and look purposive.

The side profile of the concept resemble its Volkswagen cousins (Jetta, Vento) at the front and even the square bracket-like tail lamps resemble those of the Volkswagen Vento and Laura. The pronounced wheel arches and chunky alloy wheels add a muscular flair to the generally well proportionate sedan.

Though we don’t have a proper rear photo of the L concept, we assume, it would also resemble the Vento in many ways. Also, the spy photos of the Lauretta test mules don’t actually reveal much of the design cues as they were heavily camouflaged.

The Lauretta will likely have the overall structure as the Mission L concept, sans fancy elements like the chunky alloy wheels and LED daytime running lights as well as bright tail lamps.

What we know so far about the Lauretta so far

The Lauretta is expected to be launched in early October while the actual deliveries to customers would begin only in December 2011.

Under the hood of the Lauretta, we will find the same 1.6 litre petrol and 1.6 litre diesel engines that power the Volkswagen Vento. The ARAI mileage of Vento petrol (manual) is 15.04 kmpl while that of the diesel versions is 20.54 kmpl and we expect similar mileage figures for the Lauretta too.

The Lauretta will compete with Maruti Suzuki SX4, Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Fiat Linea and Volkswagen Vento.

The base variant of the Lauretta could be priced at as low as Rs. 6.5 lakh* while the top-end variant could be priced at Rs. 9 lakh*.
