Skoda is working on yet another special edition version of the Rapid C-Segment sedan, the Czech car maker’s best selling car in India. The latest special edition from Rapid could be dubbed the “Black Edition” and is expected to come with a bunch of cosmetic upgrades. The headlamps will see a blacked out finish while the grille will get glossy black detailing. The Black treatment will carry over to the fog lamp and wing mirror housing, rounded off with the alloy wheels.

On the inside, the Skoda Rapid could gain a feature or two although it is too early to put a finger on what exactly the C-Segment sedan is likely to gain on the features front. The more interesting bit on the car is likely to be in the mechanicals department, with a 1.5 liter TDI turbo diesel engine expected to replace the 1.6 liter TDI motor. The new engine has been designed specifically for the Indian car market and is a downsized version of the 1.6 liter TDI motor. The smaller diesel motor will also be offered on the upcoming Polo Facelift and the Vento DSG cars.
Talking of the Vento DSG, a dual clutch gearbox could be offered even on the facelifted Rapid considering the fact that both the Vento and Rapid extensively share platforms, parts and production facilities. However, the Rapid is yet to receive the updates that the Volkswagen Vento got last year, in the form of a 1.2 liter TSI turbo petrol engine and a 7 speed DSG dual clutch automatic gearbox. One reason for this is to differentiate the Vento from the Rapid, with the latter serving as a lower priced car.
However, the Rapid feels better put together than the Vento, and also rides and handles better. Therefore, the new turbo petrol and turbo diesel engine additions, along with their respective DSG automatic gearboxes could do their bits to make the Skoda car even better. Now, if only Skoda’s after sales service can catch up with the performance of its cars. Expect the Rapid Black Edition to arrive onto showroom floors during the upcoming festive season.
