Skoda has announced that they will be launching the facelifted version of the Rapid sedan on the 3rd of November. The Rapid is the smallest car in Skoda’s Indian portfolio and it shares its underpinnings with the VW Vento. Since the Rapid was introduced in 2011, there has been no major update the car has received in the looks department. This will be the first major update that the car will get.
From a picture that has been leaked courtesy Autocar India, the new design is clearly evident. Like the Octavia and the Superb, the new Rapid will have the larger front grill and more angular headlamps as opposed to the more rounded ones on the out going variant. The bumper too has got an air vent with a honeycomb pattern, similar to that on the Octavia. The design is more inline with how the Rapid looks internationally as well.
Under the hood is where there is a significant change. Since the Dieselgate issue, the VW group has updated the 1.5 liter engine to give out more power. This engine features a larger turbo and makes 110 Bhp of max power. The same engine was introduced on the Ameo earlier this month. The petrol will be the same 1.6 liter unit that is currently on the Rapid. It will be interesting to see if Skoda does opt to put the 1.2 liter TSi engine into the Rapid since only the Vento has it currently. Expect the Rapid to come with both manual and automatic options, even on the diesel. On the inside, we expect an updated dashboard which will feature a new touch screen infotainment system.
Pricing and variant details are yet to be known but given the brands position, they will have to place it below the Vento which means this will make for an interesting buy. When it is launched, it will take on the City, the Ciaz, the Verna and its sibling, the Vento.
