Skoda India has just given the Rapid C-Segment sedan a new low cost variant called the Rider. The Rapid Rider is priced at Rs. 6.99 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi, making it cheaper than many entry level compact sedans such as the Maruti Dzire and the Honda Amaze. The Maruti Dzire’s top end petrol trim is priced at Rs. 7.32 lakhs while the Honda Amaze’s mid trim is priced at Rs. 7.33 lakhs.
The 6.99 lakh rupee price tag is for the petrol powered, manual gearbox equipped Rapid. The petrol engine in question is a 1.6 liter-4 cylinder MPI petrol unit that produces a peak power of 105 Bhp while peak torque is rated at 153 Nm. The gearbox is a 5 speed manual. The same engine is also sold with a 6 speed torque converter automatic gearbox on the higher variants of the Rapid. The car also gets a diesel engined trim, which has not received any variant re-alignment though. In the coming months, expect the diesel powered Rapid to also see a low cost variant as Skoda scrambles to liquidate stock ahead of the Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) emission norms.
Mr. Zac Hollis, Director – Sales, Service and Marketing, ŠKODA AUTO India said,
“The RAPID RIDER offers a compelling combination of the brand’s emotive design, exquisite interiors and class leading safety features, at a very competitive price point. It is deemed to be a best seller setting benchmark for functionality, practicality and spaciousness in its segment.”
The Skoda Rapid Rider gets twin airbags, reverse parking sensors, seat belt reminder and ABS as standard safety features. There is no clear information about feature deletions on the Rapid Rider trim for now. We do expect that Skoda has deleted a few features to bring the price down. Notably, the 1.6 liter petrol engine will soon be replaced by a 1.0 liter-3 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. The new engine will meet BS6 emission norms and will be sold with 115 Bhp-200 Nm outputs. There will be two gearbox options with the new engine: a 6 speed manual and a 7 speed twin clutch automatic. The new petrol engined Rapid is likely to be pricier than the current version, and in this light, the current Rapid Rider represents great value at Rs. 6.99 lakhs.
Meanwhile, here are the key features of the Rapid Rider limited edition,

The front grille gets blacked out while there are black wraps across many other body parts to give the car a dual tone paint scheme.
