Volkswagen has just begun testing the Polo GTI, which could be the fastest hatchback to be sold in India, ever. Here’s why. The Polo GT TSI uses a 1.8 liter turbocharged petrol engine, lifted off the Skoda Octavia. On the Euro spec Polo GTI, this motor puts out 189 Bhp of peak power and 320 Nm of torque. That much shove and twist means that the Polo GTI can blaze from standstill to 100 Kph in just 6.7 seconds. Top speed? 236 Kph, which makes the Polo GTI faster than the high performance Mini Cooper S.

Meanwhile, import details reveal that the car’s here for Research and Development, in other words testing in India before a launch here. The Polo GTI isn’t an engine job alone. 6 speed manual and 7 speed twin clutch DSG automatic gearboxes will be on offer with this engine. Considering that Volkswagen India already offers a twin clutch DSG automatic gearbox (DQ200) on the Polo GT TSI, the same route could be taken in case of the high performance GTI variant as well. Visually, the Polo GTI is quite similar to its namesake sold here, but for specific changes.

The GTI badge on the honeycomb grille and boot lid indicate the high performance capabilities of this 5 door hatchback. The twin exhaust peeking from under the rear bumper is another indication of the car’s sporty intent. The headlamps are new and so is the front bumper. The profile of the car shows off new alloy wheels and side skirts. The roof is a blacked out affair. At the rear, the bumper is a new item and so are the tail lamps. While the car’s sold in 3 door and 5 door iterations in Europe, practicality dictates a 5 door form for India.

On the whole, the Volkswagen Polo GTI will look like a regular Polo to the layman but the enthusiasts will return an all knowing smile. This is one car that’s inconspicuous enough for you to take to work, while puncturing a whole lot of egos while coming back home. Considering the fact that the 1.8 liter TSI in its latest form is already available on the Skoda Octavia Petrol, Volkswagen India has a good chance to keep prices of the Polo GTI pegged at under 15 lakh rupees. Now, that’ll also give you interiors inspired by the Golf and sport suspension with adjustable dampers.
