Ssangyong Tivoli (Mahindra S201) compact SUV spied in India without camouflage

Mahindra will soon launch a new, sub-4 meter compact SUV in India. Code-named the S201, the SUV is based on the Ssangyong Tivoli. The Tivoli is a Hyundai Creta competitor with 5 seats on offer, but for the Indian market, Mahindra will shorten it to a sub-4 meter length. The S201 will be slotted in the segment that also has the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport. Sometime next year, a longer S201 version, with 7 seats on offer will also be offered. Here are the first spyshots of an uncamouflaged Ssangyong Tivoli on Indian roads. The compact SUV is likely to be testing some components here.

The Tivoli sold in India features 1.6 litre naturally aspirated petrol and turbocharged diesel engines. For the Indian market though, Mahindra will offer a 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engine with a class leading 140 Bhp output on the S201. The diesel motor will be a 1.5 litre unit, again with a class leading, 125 Bhp output.

Both engines have been jointly developed by Ssangyong and Mahindra, and will soon make an appearance on more Mahindra cars. Notably, the engines have been developed keeping the tightening emission norms in mind. So, these engines will be able to meet Bharat Stage 6 emission norms comfortably.

Manual and automatic gearboxes are likely to be on offer on both the 5 seat and the 7 seat variants of the S201 compact SUV. Both SUVs will feature a monocoque body, with a front wheel drive layout as standard. An all wheel drive layout is unlikely to be on offer considering the poor demand for such an option in the fuel efficiency conscious Indian market. As for pricing, expect Mahindra to price the S201 extremely competitively. Expect a sub-7 lakh rupees starting price for the new SUV, which is expected to arrive into the market during this year’s festive season.
