Snapshot: CarToq profiles 5 upcoming SUVs in 2014. These SUV launches are a mix of facelifts and all-new products, with a sub-25 lakh rupee price tag being the common thread that runs across all these SUVs.
Renault Duster Facelift
The Renault Duster has been in the Indian market for nearly 2 years. By the middle of next year, the Duster is likely to get a cosmetic makeover, along with a few other feature additions on the inside. The car’s overall look, and its existing range of engines and transmission options will be retained. While the 2 liter TCe turbo petrol engine and a 4 wheel drive system to the diesel powered models would be nice additions, don’t count on Renault India to offer those options here due to cost considerations. Maruti Suzuki SX4 Crossover
The Suzuki S-Cross concept is the new SX4 crossover for international markets. Maruti Suzuki will launch the SX4 crossover by the end of next year as its sub-Grand Vitara SUV offering. To be made available with a 1.6 liter Fiat Multijet turbo diesel and a 1.6 liter petrol engines, the SX4 Crossover will be a five seat SUV. Pricing and positioning are be expected to be south of the Mahindra XUV500.
Mahindra Scorpio Facelift
A top selling SUV in India for many decades, the Scorpio will get yet another facelift come the middle of next year. The 2014 Scorpio facelift is likely to focus on improving the aesthetics while adding more features and creature comforts. The interiors of the SUV will get a refurbishment while engines and gearboxes will be carried over unchanged. The 2014 Scorpio facelift will pave way for an all new model in 2015-16 given the fact that Mahindra is readying up a lighter, more efficient and an all-new version of its best selling SUV.
Skoda Yeti Facelift
Internationally, the Skoda Yeti has been facelifted. India’s turn with the facelifted Yeti will come next year. The facelifted Yeti adopts Skoda’s new global design language. The round and square headlamps of the current version are replaced by rectangular wrap around units on the facelifted models. Other changes include a revised front end, and smarter interiors with a new steering wheel borrowed from the Octavia. The 2 liter TDI turbo diesel engine (140 Bhp-320 Nm) will continue unchanged on the facelifted Yeti.
3rd generation Hyundai Santa Fe
The Santa Fe SUV, in its third generation, will finally hit Indian shores on the 6th of February, 2014. The SUV could be CKD assembled at Hyundai India’s Sriperumbudur facility, off Chennai, to keep costs low. The 2014 Santa Fe will retain a 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine along with a 7 seat layout. Renault Koleos Facelift
Renault will roll out the facelifted Koleos into India soon. The crossover has already been facelifted internationally, with a new front end, an R-Link infotainment system on the inside, along with other interior trim changes. The 2 liter turbo diesel engine (148 Bhp-320 Nm) is retained and so is the 6 speed automatic gearbox that drives all four wheels through the all-wheel drive mechanism. The Renault Koleos is imported into India through the completely built unit (CBU) route. This scenario is unlikely to change given the low volumes that the SUV garners in India.
All-new Nissan X-Trail
This year’s Frankfurt Motor Show saw the all-new X-Trail SUV being unveiled by Nissan. Global deliveries will begin next year with India also to get the new X-Trail sometime in 2014. The all-new X-Trail comes with a revamped designand new features. The SUV while being larger than the outgoing model, is actually lighter due to the extensive use of plastics in the new model. While engine details are under wraps for the moment, the 2 liter turbo diesel engine is likely to get a revamp.
Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Automatic
As detailed in CarToq’s scoop a few weeks ago, Mitsubishi will add a 5 speed automatic gearbox to the Pajero Sport SUV by the end of the year. The automatic variant of the Pajero Sport will give the SUV more ammo to take on segment leader, the Toyota Fortuner. The Pajero Sport Automatic will be priced a lakh rupees higher than the manual gearbox equipped variant. The Pajero Sport Automatic will continue to use the 2.5 liter turbocharged diesel engine that’s good for 178 PS-400 Nm.
