The popularity of cars with sunroofs has skyrocketed in India, and it’s not solely due to their functionality. In the tropical climate of the country, sunroofs are often not kept open for extended periods of time. However, whenever they are opened, it’s not uncommon to witness people hanging out of them. A notable example is superstar Rajnikanth, who can be seen doing just that while greeting his fans.

He enthusiastically waves at his fans, who have eagerly gathered to catch a glimpse of the superstar. The slow-moving convoy progresses as numerous individuals fervently wave at him.

While it is an exciting sight, the increasing trend of people attempting similar acts while driving on public roads is a cause for concern. It’s not just Rajnikanth; even prominent politicians like our Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been seen appearing out of sunroofs or standing on the sidestep of vehicles to interact with the public. It remains unclear where the general public draws inspiration from to engage in this literal “standing out,” particularly through the car’s roof.
How to use the sunroof?
Sunroofs have transitioned from being a luxury car feature to being commonly found in affordable vehicles in India in recent years. While sunroofs enhance the visual appeal of a vehicle and allow fresh air to flow in, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks associated with improper use.
Driving at high speeds with the windows open can result in direct airflow into the eyes, which can lead to discomfort and potential vision problems. Sunroofs, on the other hand, are designed to facilitate airflow while minimizing wind disturbance. However, it is disheartening to see that many individuals choose to stand out of the sunroof, an extremely perilous activity, particularly for children.
Standing out of a moving vehicle through the sunroof poses significant dangers. Sudden braking can cause individuals to be forcefully ejected from the vehicle, risking severe injuries. Additionally, debris such as small stones from other vehicles could strike them, leading to further harm. Moreover, there is a grave risk of coming into contact with electric wires, which could have disastrous consequences for those hanging out of the roof.
It is crucial to prioritize safety and discourage such risky behaviour. Sunroofs should be used responsibly, ensuring that they enhance the enjoyment of the vehicle without compromising the well-being of the occupants.
