MC Mary Kom is India’s most successful female amateur boxer and is a five-time AIBA World Amateur Boxing Champion. Last month, Mary Kom, who is now a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, picked up her new ride a Mercedes Benz GLS from T & T Motors in New Delhi.
The GLS-Class is called the S-Class of SUVs by Mercedes Benz and is a popular car among the nation’s elite. However, what makes the GLS purchased by the boxer nicknamed Magnificent Mary rather special is that it was the 20,000th Mercedes Benz sold by T&T Motors.
It is not known which model of the Mercedes GLS was purchased by Mary Kom in the post shared by T&T Motors on their Facebook page. The Mercedes-Benz GLS is sold in three guises in India. The GLS 350d diesel is the most popular model and there are two petrol variants – the GLS 400 and the performance-oriented Mercedes AMG GLS 63.
The Mercedes-Benz GLS 350d is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 diesel engine that produces 225 Bhp and 620 Nm of torque. The GLS 400 is powered by a 3,0-litre Turbo V6 petrol engine that is good for 329 Bhp and 480 Nm of torque. The GLS 350d and 400 are fitted with 9-speed automatic gearboxes that send power to all four wheels and are both priced at Rs 85.67 lakhs ex-showroom. Both models are also offered in Grand Edition guise which is priced at Rs 86.9 lakhs.
The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 is the most powerful variant in the GLS range. The GLS 63 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 engine with 577 Bhp and 760 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic gearbox and the GLS 63 AMG sprints from 0-100km/h in just 4.6 seconds despite weighing in at nearly 2.6 tonnes. The top-speed of the GLS 63 AMG is limited to 250 km/h.
The Massive SUV comes packed with features galore including LED multi-beam headlamps with integrated DRLs and LED taillamps. The GLS sports a large 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system on the inside and Nappa leather upholstery.
While it is not clear as to which variant Mary Kom opted for, the Mercedes-Benz GLS is most popular in the 350d trim. Sporting a mammoth size, the SUV comes with a host goodies including multi-beam headlamps with LED daytime running lights. The cabin features an 8-inch free floating infotainment system, updated three-spoke steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather and a touchpad unit placed between the two front seats. The Nappa leather also extends to the seats and door pads, keeping up the luxury quotient on the new GLS.
The GLS can be optioned with a low-range configuration and a centre diff lock. The flagship Mercedes SUV comes packed with safety aids including 9 airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, cruise control, ESP, collision prevention assist, crosswind assist, attention assist and Pre-Safe among many others.
