Finally, Maruti Suzuki SX4 will come in the diesel avatar. The much awaited Diesel version of Sx4 will likely be launched in January 2011 in the price range of Rs 8 to 10 lakh.
Sources say that the company has started the production of Maruti Suzuki SX4 diesel already. DWS had earlier reported that SX4’s diesel avatar will be launched sometime in 2011. Updated: SX4 diesel 1.3 DDiS engine launch in Feb 2011
The engine will not be the 1.3 litre DDiS (known as Multijet) engine that performs duty in Maruti Swift, Ritz and Swift Dzire. Maruti Suzuki SX 4 will have an all new 1.6 litre DDiS CRDi diesel engine that produces a maximum power of 115 bhp and maximum torque of 200 Nm.
While we expect Maruti to carry out embed subtle changes for the SX4 diesel to distinguish from SX4 petrol, la Toyota which tweaked the front grille and a had few cosmetic updates in Corolla Altis diesel to differentiate it from the Corolla Altis petrol.
This is quick and timely response from Maruti to increased competition in the compact sedan market in the past three months which launch of Volkswagen Vento and Toyota Etios.
Diesels have been pretty popular and therefore, should help lift sales of Maruti Suzuki SX4 provided the new 1.6 litre DDiS diesel engine is fuel efficient and performs well in all driving conditions (as well as the 1.3 litre DDiS diesel engine does).
We are yet to know if Maruti will launch an automatic version of SX4 diesel at a higher price tag. It is speculated that Maruti will price Sx4 diesel competitively to grab attention of Rs. 8 – 10 lakh sedan buyers.
Currently, the sub Rs.10 lakh segment is filled with competent cars: the segment leader, Honda City, recently launched Volkswagen (VW) Vento, Hyundai Verna Transform and Fiat Linea.

Maruti Launches in 2010
Maruti has been refreshing its line-up in a hurry. The year saw it launch the new Alto range which is its best selling model. Other big sellers like Wagon R and Swift too saw new versions launched as did Estilo. India’s biggest car maker is not in a hurry to let others grab market share. And its doing all that it can to defend its crown.
